Question about MXT

huntn_relics

New member
I currently own a Minelab SE and absolutely love the machine. I am thinking about getting a MXT to hunt in real trashy and iron areas because the SE is not so good in that area. Can anyone tell me how the MXT is in trashy areas and with tons of iron? How well does it work for relic hunting as well. Any advice would be appreciated good and bad,

Thanks
Jason

I find the MXT to be very good at discrimination and target ID in iron trash, it can be a little noisy but setting the threshold low, locking the ground tracking and the proper amount of sensitivity helps in this area of operation. Take the time to learn the detector and how to set it up for different situations. Sometimes when hunting coins, the relic mode is the better mode to use like when there is a lot of iron trash in the ground. In the relic mode when the detector is swept over a Ferris and non ferris item together like a piece of iron and a coin together the high tone will prevail over the low tone of the iron. In this mode anything below the disk setting will read low tone and anything above will read a high tone. In the Relic mode there is less chance of masking the coin out like in the coin and jewelry mode if the coin is next to a piece of iron trash as it will read a high tone. Also the VDI numbers read the same in both modes, if a nickel is 18-20 on the VDI scale it will be the same in the coin and relic mode on the VDI scale for both modes.

Using the proper coil for a hunting situation helps as well, smaller coils for trashy areas like the 5.3 or 4X6DD. The key thing with the MXT in iron trash is to lock the ground tracking after it has been balanced on clean ground. Also the MXT has a fast recovery speed and it can be swung at a very slow rate, almost a crawl to isolate a target next to trash with the smaller coils. I do like the Relic mode for all the reasons stated. You will also find that the alternate Relic mode with the trigger forward is pretty handy as well, in this mode the items below the disk set point will be silent and read a high tone above the disk set point.

I agree with Bill G's comments. I have found the 4X6 DD and the 6X10 DD to both work pretty will in trashy environments. The 4X6 is outstanding and the 6X10 is definitely better than the standard 9.5. I have both the 9.5 and the 5.3 as well, but use them the least for the hunting I do. The 6X10 is on the machine 80% of the time. My two bits.

Use the 4X6 coil. Relic mode, trigger forward and go VERY VERY slow and listen for just the high tones. It will be noise but concentrate just on high tones. H/H JOE in MD

Bill, I agree the 6x10DD Eclipse coil works great on the MXT and it does a pretty good job in heavy iron trash as well. I use the 6x10DD & the 5.3" the most and very rarely use the stock 950" coil.

I hunt in some very trashy sites (dumpsites) that contain tons of iron, lead, brass, etc. I've found I do better in Prospecting mode, trigger forward. The "Iron Percentage" readout tells me if I have an iron target and, by watching VDI numbers closely, I can get a good idea whether to dig or not. I use a 5" Excelerator coil that separates the targets extremely well. I've been able to locate coin-sized targets as well as a lot of good relics this way.

Here are a few items I've found in Prospecting mode with the little coil.

Nice finds, I know where some old dump sites are hear from the late 1800s & early 1900s through the 1940s with a lot of iron trash. I will have to give the Prospecting mode a try with the trigger forward.

Thanks for the info & HH :beers:
