Question about MXT and gold

robert roy

New member
Need some expert feedback.
I found what I thought was a gold bracelet Sunday. Turned out to be costum jewelry.

When it was in the ground, it read a 10 on the MXT VID. When I got it home and ran the MXT over it it read a 4 which
is foil. I verified it with my Ace 250. It also read foil. The fact that I could get a reading different from the one when it was in the ground
seems odd.

So which is it: foil or gold?

I showed it to a friend of mine and she identified it was cheap costume jewerly. Not gold. The pearls were fake.

Regards
Robert

It's not odd, there are many reasons it reads different in the ground. A couple reasons are how it was oriented in the ground, the depth it was in the ground, and the mineralization of the ground. There is also the difference caused by another target in proximity of your bracelet. The last reading you should take is when the target in the ground is in the center of the coil. Some times we don't do this and then we pass the target over the center of the coil when air testing it. This gives different readings. Many gold ear rings read 4 and I've found gold rings that have read 10. Look at the bottom row of your screen (prospecting) the gold range easily goes from 0 to around 75. My lowest gold jewelry in C/J or relic mode is an 8 and my highest is a 57. Rob

I didn't mean you should hunt in prospecting mode, I just wanted you to see the range of gold which you can see where the arrow is pointing. As I said in the PM, my lowest gold find has been an 8 and my highest was a 57. The 8 was a 14kt baby ring and the 57 was a gold state championship ring. Foil doesn't mean it will be foil any more than pop tab means it will be a pop tab. Much gold jewelry is also found with the exact reading of a pop tab or foil. That's why you have to dig junk to find gold. The reason silver is easier to find is many silver rings read the same as clad coins. Many guys ignore junk readings and miss gold. They don't ignore coin readings and so they find silver jewelry. Rob
