Question about metal detector

Can anyone give me any information about a Garrett ADS metal detector? Both pro and con and approximate worth. A friend of mine was thinking about purchasing one from a lady. It belonged to her recently deceased husband. He (my friend) ask me about it, but I don't know anything about an ADS. Thought some you fellas could clue me in.

I purchased a new ADS111, in 1984, and hunted with it for more than 2 years, the machine is very sensitive, always huntrd in VLF, and when I found a target with a solid hit from both directions, I would pinpoint it in thr TR mode, with coil over the center of the target, pull the coil off the target, if the machine goes quit, dig, if not go on. Some junk targets will possibly fool you at first, but with a little hunting time you'll soon notice the difference in the sounds, the only thing I can't remember at this time was how to ground balance it, and I don't know where my manuals at right now, only other thing I can tell you is that the garrett ADS111 and ADS series metal detectors out performed many of the others, at that time, I have dug coins 4-6" deep with it quite often, hope this helps.:detecting:

The ADS is an older machine no longer in production but is still a great machine to hunt with and will hold its own with many new detectors.

I've seen them go for any where around $50 to $125 depending on extras. They use 6 9v batteries, so plan on spending a little $$ to keep it going. There was an article in EW Treasures a few months back about a young man who mastered one and was finding a lot of coins in playgrounds. He sited that the ADS was better at getting close to metal objects like swingsets better than the newer units. He also said it did better in the loose dirt and mulch found in playgrounds. Any detector you master, is a plus.

Good Luck to your friend.

My dad bought me an ADS Groundhog back in the early 70s and I still have it. I sent it off to Garrett last month to have it repaired and it is working like new. I love it. It has discrimination, ground balancing and other features. It pinpoints very accurately.
