Question about metal detector coils and pin pointers!

Guys I have always heard to not leave your detector in the car or car trunk due to hot and cold temps. Does this go for accesories to like coils and pinpointers? Tell me what you guys think or do I just hate to be out hunting and realize I forgot my pinpointer or really wish I had brought a bigger or smaller coil.

I can't see any issues with coils, unless it gets up to 200 degrees in your vehicle. Pinpointers have internal parts so there may be a very slight risk if not at all. Personally I don't leave ANYTHING in my truck overnight. Our little town of 600 has an almost nonexistant crime rate but I still would'nt take any chances. They can take my screwdrivers and hack saw, but they ain't getting my detecting gear !

When I'm out hunting though ... I bring all of my coils and anything else I may need to have a smooth day. I am usually close to my truck wherever I am. But if I need to hike-in to a spot I have a Garrett backpack that will hold everything I need, from my gear, to lunch and water, and of course toilet paper.

I carry it all, at all times...theres even a sandscoop and a tiling spade in the back of my open pick up right now and theres a foot of snow on the ground. I for sure have an extra one of everything, especially a screwdriver, you'd be amazed at how easily even a good one can snap when your ripping or prying at something, I've got a set of chest waders in the cab, a couple of changes of clothes/socks, extra shirts, paper towels, tape, windex, batteries, kneepads, etc. Theres usually a bottle or two of water and an apple or orange rolling around somewhere underneath the seats, several lighters, a cigar from when my daughter was born 30 years ago that says "Its a girl" just in case I really hit a gold brick!. I've been very hard on the equipment, with no ill effect, but I would be worried about the heat in the summer if a fellow lives down south, and I'd be worried about a break-in in certain areas like McDave says..I just dont want to be caught without the wand if I get the chance to swing! I can live without the Pinpointer, but I know I cant hunt without the screwdriver!

If, for some reason I have to leave my detector, coils etc. in my vehicle and it's likely to get very hot, I store them on the floor or under the dash and cover them with a jacket, blanket or similat to keep them from becoming overly warm from the direct sun. I open the windows a touch for air circulation. If I can park in a shady place, that's even better. Anything with electronics inside can possibly be affected by too much heat, not so much, cold. I have heard of coils warping under high temperatures which may or may not effect their functionality, but could open a seam and destroy their water resistence.

i always leave mine in the trunk without any problems. i think it could get too hot or cold if you leave them inside the car.

I think the coil is the weak link in the heat besides alkaline batteries oozing. Most electronics have no issues with the high temps of your car. For example, stereo systems, lcd tv, game consoles...etc. If the coil is heated, it could deform, or develop small cracks. All of which can reduce the performance. Its just CYA to add that warning to sensitive electronic instruments in order to ensure peak operating performance. The propointer is extremely well built and in my opinion would be least affected by heat.

Thanks guys I guess I am going to start putting my coils and pinpointer in a back pack to bring it in and out of the house I will just hang it right beside my detector so I will remember it.

i always take my gear in the temps in a vehicle with windows up even the trunk can exceed 200 degrees its like putting your detector in the oven anyone for detector pie ?

I don't like to guess whether or not my electronics are getting compromised/short-life'd from excessive heat. I don't leave them in a hot vehicle.

I left an Xlt in the trunk of a black car durring the summer, and forgot about it, for two days. Messed up my screen and had to have the careen replaced by Whites
Not cheap and won't do that again

Its a rare occasion when I leave my detector, pinpointer or coil in my vehicle; as a rule when I come in after a hunt my portable electronic equipment comes in too. I just seems to be the better side of caution where I live - this stuff is expensive and I'd like to be sure I hang onto it a while. If I put one of my detectors away knowing it will not be used for a few months, I always remove the battery pack too.
