Question about digiital

Since I have developing a terrible case of spring XS fever lately, I have been reading and re-reading the manual and Andy's book trying to get ready for when the snow finally melts.
Last fall when I got the XS I just used a beginners coin screen with the upper right hand corner opened up and used it in digital and for the most part just dug the 28's and 30's and stayed away from the 31's. I have done quite a bit of testing with it in the advanced smart screen and seem to be getting the hang of things pretty well for the most part.
So here's the question.... last fall when I was detecting in digital, why was I even getting 31's if the majority of the screen was blacked out. When in digital, does the machine only distinguish the conductivity(vertical numerical value) of the target and not the ferrous content(horizontal) regardless of the fact that I am in the advanced mode.
I'm a little confused at why I was even seeing the 31's, I would think it should have nulled out.
Thanks.

the digital reading from what I understand is based on conductivity alone, with size coming into play as well.. 31 would be at the very top of the screen on the smart mode, anything that reads that high would register 31 including iron I suppose.. then the icons that appear next to the digital are supposed to represent the ferrousity and digital reading combination.. which explains why the same digital may show a coin icon or that same number not showing any icon or a ring etc.. since I dont use digital much I really cant say how accurate either is. I do know I dont think I would try editing out the very top of the screen to prevent hitting on 31's as its way to close to where some silver would read.. I generally go by the audio quality and the size of the target on what Im going to dig.. a deep can or can lid can sound pretty good, but almost always sounds like a big target in pinpoint with the long drawn out signal.. I think once you use it more you will get comfortable with audio disc alone, and accept everything except a certain amount of iron and in extreme trash....Jim
