question about digging in parks

burried gold

New member
i would like some input from you guys about digging in unkept areas of parks. and i mean over grown and 100% left to be wild areas. would it be ok to use a relic shovel in these areas? or do you think it would draw to much attention?

NO--NO--NO------DO NOT TAKE ANY SHOVEL INTO ANY PARK UNDER ANY CONDITIONS!!!!!------These kind of actions is going to get ALL parks closed to ALL of us!!!!-----Always remember---how we present ourselves as treasure hunters is ALL IMPORTANT as to the longevity of this great hobby.----And taking a shovel into ANY park (unkept or no) is NOT the way to create a positive image for the hobby.----It doesn't mean we need to be "walking on egg shells"---it just means we need to use some common sense!----------Del

draw too much attention,and why risk it? use a lesche!..gotta remember,it's NOT a field!..it's still a park!

Save those for private property that you have permission to detect. Make it known what you will be using on the private land too.

Also no matter where you detect in the park..cover your holes well, and leave it as close as possible to the way you found the property..

He was employed by the same company I worked for at the time (1994 on the Santa Fe RR) To make a long story short, he took me under his wing and tutored me on metal detecting. I feel lucky to have met somebody like this. He showed me a lot of 'tricks' on metal detecting, coil control, pinpointing, how to pop coins out of the ground without making a mess of the lawn. One thing that stuck in my mind after all these years. He told me " Don't use a shovel in somebodies yard, and never use one in a park" Whether you know it or not.........people are watching you!

I left my club because they would take no action on a member who repeatedly ignored warnings about his digging techniques. And for what it's worth-I was approached this week by a school official who just wanted to let me know that schools are now burying fiber optic cables and he left me with a smile when he saw my small screwdriver (coins are only about 1-2"). I know you asked about parks, but I'm sure that soon these cables, which also operate on surveillance cameras will soon be standard.

OMG!!! No way should you ever use a shovel in a park or school. All targets are going to be easily in hand tool depth. I only use my shovel when relic hunting in the fields and woods.

The only vidos I've ever sen with shovels as implments in in plowed field in England. There they are working deep. Use one here and you'll be out on your ear in minutes. As popular as a gopher...

be careful about using a large bowie knife too, my city has a knife ordinance, thanks to the thugs in the parks. i still ponder the question about the lesch digging tool, is it considered a form of knife? the local judge would get the street walkers for blades and razors, and then they started totin scissors, he popped them for the knife ordinance then, saying they were not in the proper environment to use them as scissors. cant carry a weapon on school property. screw driver it is!

wear sunglasses, take a dog along with you, wear a shirt that says "I'm blind, deaf, and dumb" Then you can carry a shovel, so it looks like you are walking your dog...Then the onlookers will say, "lookat that old blind @#$%^&*, he cant see where his dog just messed, and he's digging up the entire yard!" hope this helps, HH!

Good one Mudpuppy !!!
