Question about depth reading in pinpoint mode.

Every coin or coin sized object I've dug reads at least 4 inches. Have dug a lot of coins that were just under the surface. If I get a reading that says 8 inches the coin will be at 5 or 6. Is there any way to adjust this. Made sure the coil was on the ground. I tried factory reset with no change. Also increased all metal sensitivity with no change. Any advice?

you need to squeeze the trigger off to the side of the target, on a piece of clean ground. If your over the target at all, it will detune the detector, making it think its a bit deeper than it actually is.
I havent even looked at the depth reading on any of the targets I've dug with the 75. I prefer to size the target (in VCO), and rely on the "feel" of it, as opposed to trying to determine its depth with the meter. Too many variables for the meter to be accurate. AND, since most of my finds are in fields, I just pop a plug the same size no matter WHAT the target, unless its obvious its a very shallow one.

or "tilted" will also throw the inches meter off some....like Streak said there are so many variables. Mineralization as well.
Over time, after several hours in the field, you will be able to tell by sound the differences in shallower & deeper coins as well...

If any part of the coil is over the target when you first pull the trigger, it'll detune it a bit, so the machine thinks it's deeper than it is. (I use this a lot to pinpoint shallow stuff). Also, like Bill said, if it's tilted or on edge, I guess the reflected signal is smaller, making the 75 assume it's a deeper coin. So far the F-75 is one of the best pinpointing machines I've ever used.

Mark and Streak are both saying that detuning will cause the depth to read deeper on the F-75. I am not seeing that with the T2! For field hunting I don't use P/P. Sunday I hunted a one room schoohouse in the country and dug 2 Wheats that read 8" on the meter and still read 8" after detuning. BTW they were 8" deep.

I don't really see a difference in the type of pinpointing I do. There may be, but nothing different jumps out at me so I figured it was the same or very similar. Like you, if I'm in a field or something I'll just x-over the target & not even bring up the inches reading. Sometimes I will, like at that last site with the deep musketalls that were all 7" plus I would get a depth reading as a shallow signal there is 99% trash.....
I said the type of pinpointing I do because I personally don't try detuning. I know lots of folks love it, & swear by it, but I think I got away from it with the coinstrike, where if you detuned wrong you often lost the target completely.

I like a good easily detuned VCO P/P when I want to use it. The 1236 is another one that works great.. they are very similar as I recall.
