Question about deep target audio...

polestar

New member
While I'm waiting and hoping for winter to die a swift death, which won't happen anytime soon with 15 below in the forecast, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what to look for when Quattro hits a good deep target. I remember my White's 4900d years back when I got a good deep coin it would be just a faint whisper which I'm sure you all know what I mean. Is it the same way with the Quattro?

Also, the Quattro has some really strange noises almost cartoonish sounds such as the one that sounds like a cork being pulled out of a small bottle and others. Do they mean anything significant or should I just pay attention to the smooth and even repeatables like on the average detector? Thanks to everyone in advance!:|:detecting::minelab:

polestar as far as I know the Quattro gives the same volume tone for all depths, unless it's a very big target which will sound huge,if it detects anything even at max depth it will give the standard ping so there's no need to listen for faint whispers.

Mike, I have to say that when I had mine I could sure tell a difference between a deep target and a shallow one. I had some that were "barely there", quite a few times.

If the volume is set too high you may not. And I know a lot of folks crank that volume up as a matter of habit. And the preset is actually 20, or max on the Quattro. But it seems that with the Quattro the VOLUME control can more accurately be thought of as GAIN control. So you are possibly running MAX GAIN, which would result in the condition you describe...no difference. Try running the volume lower until you DO hear a difference. Crank the volume up on your phones, but run it lower on the Quattro...see if that helps. Here's an excerpt straight from the manual:

Quote "The Volume feature is used to adjust the maximum volume of the target signal - not the overall volume of the Quattro MP..." Not sure I get it...I understand it as this is NOT a volume adjustment for all the other menu buttons :)

Mike, tell us where you would set your Quattro volume to get the same Explorer gain of let's say about 7 or 8...this is where I hear people say they can tell the difference between shallow and deep targets.

What they are saying is exactly what it says...it adjusts the TARGET SIGNAL volume, not the overall volume of the machine.

I would start at 15 and work your way down until you can hear a difference between a quarter at say 2" and one at 8". The point is that when set at 20, it will make everything sound big and shallow. When lowered down some, deep ones will sound deep and shallow ones proportionately louder. As it says, it's a matter of preference. And I can't give you a number because I don't know how keen your ears are or how deaf you are or what headphones you use or where you run your headphone volume or if they have volume at all. All that matters. So just play with it. :)

I will try what you suggest and see what happens. It would be awsome if the tones did differentiate between between shallow or deep targets since I'm more of a tone hunter then actual visual hunter.

Thanks,
Mike

See, I don't do that with my CZ-70 either. I set the volume on the CZ-70 to 4...that way you don't get "Faint Target Audio Boost" and the deep targets sound deep. Going above volume 4 on the CZ kicks in the faint target boost. So what I do is set the volume on the detector to 4 and crank up the volume on the Gray Ghost's.

I definitely will try that this spring, it would be awesome to hear that "whisper" again! Sabisch's book claims to always leave volume at max or you will lose the deep ones. However, as you posted Mike, the manual clearly states that the volume control "does not effect the detectors sensitivity or power".Thanks.:minelab:
