question about CZ5 for the experts.

Hello to everyone,
My question is this. The CZ3D is stated as being like 2 machines in 1 since when in salt mode the detecting characteristics are like that of a CZ5 when in salt mode. Now what is the difference in performance on regular soil between the standard and salt mode with the CZ5?
Are detecting abilities the same other than ground balance if used on regular soil with the salt vs the normal mode?

Thanks very much for your help

Badger,

I have a CZ6a that I have used since the 90's and it is virtually the same as the CZ5. What I have noticed is that in salt mode, my 6a is not as sensitive to finer gold rings and smaller, lower conductive targets.

When I use my 6a on the beach, if I can ground balance in normal mode and have the unit stable, I will use it that way. Most of the time though, when I hit the wet sand or suds, I have to use salt mode. The only thing then is, I cannot ground balance a lot of the time, and just leave the gb at 10.

I think the salt mode probably eliminates the salt conductivity range, and hence, some of the range for gold items. Just my guess.

I am sure others will have more definitive answers.

Thanks JC for your input,I think theres probably a litle loss of depth on regular soil with salt mode as well. Then the CZ3D would be like a slightly "hobbled" CZ5 in the salt mode if thats the case.

According to NASA Tom the CZ3D in reg(salt) mode is just the same as a CZ5 with no loss in depth in the high range( having gotten a silver dime at close to a foot I would say that is an accurate statement) he does say it may lose a little depth rel small or gold items. Have done some testing and say any loss if any is negligable. Remember the CZ20 is locked into the salt mode and has been a underwater favorite for years and now the CZ21 has emerged which I have no knowledge of..

Well if thats the case Dan and what you said makes great sense to me,I have no reason to hold off buying a CZ3D then. I,ve been using an Eagle Spectrum and the displays backlight went out some time ago so I,ve been trying to decide on a new model and I;ve always been impressed by the fact that when hunting an old baseball field in a forest preserve and getting what I thought was everything possible from there in a 3 week period with my Whites,I told another fellow about this place who owned a CZ5. We met at this place and I proceded to watch him pull out a total of 14 mercury dimes in the 9-11 inch range over a 5 hour period! My Whites would go no deeper than maybe 6 inches,7 at the most on a dime . He would get a little tink tink signal and say that was deep silver, and when I would try and get any kind of signal with my Whites there was nothing there. I,m pretty pumped up now about getting that CZ and want to thank you and JC for your input.

Badgar...good luck with it. I think once you learn a CZ, great finds await you. Just go slow and don't run the sensitivy too high at first. If the 3D is anything like my 6a in terms of sensitivity, running too high will make it false.

Sens on a CZ3D and CZ70 the newest CZ's have different sens. parameters and would feel a max. of 4.5 to 5 is tops but will go as deep as older CZ's with their sens. perhaps at 7 or 8...as you can run older CZ's higher with no falsing...I don't know the ryhme or reason but they do differ in this aspect...but again are depth demons old or new...

"Furthermore,,, yes, hunting in the 'salt' mode on the CZ-3D is identical to hunting in the 'salt' mode on a CZ-5,,,,,,,,,,, and looking for coins in the 'salt' mode is hardly a detriment. I know of many people that use their CZ-20 for inland 'old-coin' hunting,,,,,, and the CZ-20 is always locked in the 'salt' mode. Depth is lost in the 'salt' mode on very small gold items,,,,, but hardly affects silver/copper coins."

When both the CZ5 and CZ3D are in the salt mode they are the same.I have noticed in the field the CZ5 has better depth when out of the Salt Mode.I have use both units and think the performance is identical except for the enhanced mode. The older white rod CZ5 doesn't have the depth of the newer CZ5s.I noticed on the older unit I would lose a lot of targets after a flap or plug was lifted. I have used a CZ3D in older parks with lots of aluminum trash without any major problems.I think both of these metal detectors are more stable than the CZ7A Pro or CZ70.I used a CZ20 in one of my favorite parks last year and was surprised how unstable this unit is when the sensitivity is cranked up.

Thanks again to everyone for their input on this.
I placed my order today and will have my new CZ3D by next Wednesday!

Best regards and good hunting to everyone--Roger

I think the CZ3D will serve you well. Two of the better hunter's who use to post quite a bit on this forum was Allen form MI and the West Virginia dirt digger. My suggestion go back a couple of years in the CZ post and look at some of their finds.WVA Dirtdigger used a CZ3D and Allen a CZ5.Good luck with the CZ.
