Question about control "falsing" on Silver uMax

Dirt Poor

New member
I have a Silver uMax that has been a great machine. It works fine, but I cleaned it the other day and noticed(after putting it back together) that when I turn the disc. knob, I get a little falsing noise. I don't remember the machine doing it before, but maybe it did. It's been a while since I used it. It doesn't false when the knob is stopped, but only while turning up or down. I wondered if something needs cleaning inside, or if other uMax owners have this, too. Thanks.

Not sure if this has anything to do with what yours is doing - but

I have had a few different Tesoro's that would make alittle noise when I turn the disc. up or when I turnd it down. It would only do it at one specific spot, if I remember correctly it was about on the 2 on the disc. scale. It was just a slight "chirp" and it never hurt performance in any way. Can't recall this happening on any of the Silver uMax's I have had though. Steve.

Ditto, I have seen this several times on different machines and have yet to see it affect performance in any way.

Is it a true falsing tone or is it an scratchy intermittent sound? Sometimes a dirty pot will hiss when you turn the knob. Some good cleaner made specifically for electronics sprayed into the pot sometimes works like shooting carburetor cleaner into a cruddy carburetor. Jim

Thank all of you for the posts. I think Grumpy may have a point. How would you get the cleaner into the pot? I remember years ago, with the old-type televisions, they made a spray that was called "channel cleaner"(if I remember correctly), and you sprayed it around the knobs to solve a similar problem. Thanks again.

Somebody other than me can probably describe a pot better...but you have to be on the inside of the electronics area. For a water detector most of the time that is not a problem. For a land detector you are going to have to open something. Find the where the shaft goes through the case and then look at the back end of the pot. It's like a miniature donut. There should be some open spaces in the metal covering and just blast the cleaner in there. Don't use anything except electrical grade electronics cleaner and wear eye protection. You never know where the pressurized spray will exit the pot and it might be a point that's lined up with your eyes. Jim

Thanks, Jim. I probably won't do anything with it until it gets worse. I usually set the disc just below nickel, and leave it there.
