Question about coils : what is the difference between older coils & newer coils?

Usually not much difference as long as they work OK. In you case the two coils are not interchangeable because the two detectors operate on different frequencies and the coils are tuned for specific frequencies.
There are some changes made in coils like the MXT/DFX/V Series 950 from the older flat style and the newer model, the newer one is repairable. They both operate the same.
