Question about cleaning clad coins

Mike K (Ohio)

Active member
I have a rock tumbler I use to clean my clad and then I exchange that in for $5 gold coins.

I ran out of the white powder that came with it and was curious what everyone else uses in it's place?

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike,

I have heard of guys using walnut shells, but I prefer the sand myself. I'm sure if there is a rock shop close by or on the internet you should be able to pick up some sand there. HH.

I take it you have the gravel, if you do then just go to Sam's Club or even to the local grocery store and pick up some Real Lemon juice and give a good squirt (maybe 2 OZ) in water covering the coins and gravel and tumble the pennies for about a hour or 2 and the clad will take longer and sometime i will tumble for a hour and turn off the tumbler over nite and let the clad soak if real bad, then tumble for another hour and they will look great.
I get my Real Lemon Juice at Sam's Club as you get 2 of the 1 1/2 quarts for $5, so for the $5 you wind up with 3 quarts that will clean a lot of coins.
Make sure you separate the copper from the clad before you tumble.
