Question about batteries & headphones.

New member
The sovereign elite that I just bought only has the alkaline battery pack and not the rechargeable pack. Therefore, I will have to replace batteries as they wear out. My question is can I use the rechargeable batteries for this or do I have to use Alkaline only batteries. The reason I ask is that alkaline batteries put out 1.5 volts each, rechargeable batteries put out 1.2 volts each. Given that there are 8 batteries I will be loosing .3 volts per battery or a total of 2.4 volts. (Damn my math is brilliant, just freaken brilliant! Puts the calculater and slide rule down.) I need comments on this especially from those who have tried rechargeable batteries.

I am also looking at buying some headphones what is recommended and why?

Thanks

Ken

iv got a NiMH battery pack (12v; 1000mAH)* that they make for my Sovereign GT.they work great and will work on your Elite but will be blue in color.i would buy it with the house charger and it will last many years.look @ Kellyco site for price's.

Adding to that......
Rechargeables don't work well in the alkaline pack, because on a full charge, they are near the shutdown voltage for the detector . You will get very little run time. This applies to all Sovs.
Elite and GT packs are the same, except for color. My backup for the GT is the silver Elite alkaline pack.......color coded so I can see which one is installed !!!!!!

Thanks to both of you. So I should not get 8 rechargeable batteries and should only use alkaline batteries until I can find the correct rechargeable pack made for this model or similar model sovereign. Your 1000 mAh is very low compared to what you can get for the chargeable batteries but, if their voltage is low than they are useless.

I went out and swung today for a few hours. It was my first time out. It is not recommended in the snow and mud. I found the top of broken liquor bottle that had foil on it and a threaded metal connector. I also realized the my gardening spade is not good for the rockies. The tip bent to easily.

I think I am going to use the hip bag for the main unit as my arm fatigued to quickly. I probably am not holding it correctly. Any tips on how to hold it to avoid less fatigue?

I just bought an elite last fall and as for the rechargeable I use Energizer 2500 mAh. I get about 12~15 hours using headphones and about 8 hours without.

So far I am happy with my Elite.

A straight rod is better than the standard s-rod.
Keep your rod short so the coil hangs just off the ground in front of your feet, and don't use steel toed shoes.

Depends on what rechargeables you use as to how long it will last. If you find some good ones it may work good enough for you, but they frequently cause problems for most of us.

I was looking at 2650 mAh to use but after hearing peoples response I am not sure about it. If I could get 8-15 hours with them that would work for me. I hate to keep buying batteries.

I will try swinging next time with the control box in the hip bag that came with it. I will also find a pouch for the meter in time.

Hey Kntutt, Go to the Classified Forum, look for a post WTB WHITES BEACH-HUNTER ID Working or NOT by PLUGGER!! Send PLUGGER an e-mail concerning his Straight Shafts, and inquire if they will WORK with the ELITE!! Tell him, that I referred you!! Les Robinson

I'm considering making my own rechargeable battery pack, using 10 AAA NiMH batteries (I believe this is what Sunray does) which will give you a true 12V vs. 9.6V using 8 AA 1.2V AA rechargeable batteries.

Starting off 2.4V DC lower then the default DC voltage using 8 AA 1.2V AA rechargeable batteries is starting off 20% down from stock, that's a lot IMHO.

I wonder what that hit equates to in performance loss ?
