Quattro Questions

Ok 1st i have my MD on all metal conductive mode. now is it possible to get a, say -5 have a low tone and then get a -5 with a high tone? what im asking is can u get different tones with the same number or are all the tones assigned for that particular number? 2nd are there any coins in the 20-29 range or are they all just 30-39 and 14 for nickels, because if its that way im blocking everything except those numbers.thanx

I would suggest you grit your teeth and run in all metal and dig everything for a while. I ran in the other modes, but felt I was missing good targets, especially with the reload after nulls. The pitch of the signal will vary on the same readout depending on the metal composition. BTW, nickels will hit 14-16 depending on year and corrosion.

thanx JohnA BTW i did not know that 15 and 16 were nickels of course though ive only found nickels that were relatively new and they came up 14 but age and corrosion would make a difference when ya think bout it. any other tips would be good about any thing. BTW again the wife n i were out in the middle of nowhere 2day at an old loggin camp from bout 1907 i found a coin, 1995 dime. go figure thats like goin into an atique shop and finding a camera phone. this aint old man lol. anyways thanx again

The pitch or highness or lowness of the tone should depend on whether your in conductive mode or ferrous mode. Make sure your in one or the other. If I'm not mistaken, when your in conductive mode, the pitch should be higher for the higher numbers like copper, sliver, etc. Read Andy Sabisches' book Mastering the Quatro, to be sure, and learn a lot about the Quatro. Marc.

Hey hey, I have been using my Quattro for while now and love it. But in the case with most detectors, the more disc you use the less you will find. In my own opinion the number is really just an added bonus, dig the sounds not the number. You will learn not to rely on it as much. The depth gage is good on coin size targets, but will read deep on small items, and shallow on bigger items. If hunting coins, conductive is great, but when looking for relics and such use ferrouse, you will get a better idea of the composition of the target rather than its conductivity. Hope this helps, message me if you need any other help. L8R

Does anyone out there have Quattro and Xterra 30 experience? My daughter has an Xterra 30 and has not found any gold yet (probably because there was none) but lots of coins. She would like to move up to the Quattro and on paper it looks pretty good. The Explorer I feel is too advance as she is only eleven. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Frank. I haven't had any experience with the X Terra 30, but do use the Quattro extensively. My son who's 16 years old loves using my Quattro on the beaches, but he doesn't understand how all the setting work, and I usualy have to set it for him prior to his using it. But for easy target pick ups, it's great. The detector isn't cheap to buy, so you might want to make sure that your little girl is really interested in detecting, and it's not a passing fad. Even so, if you were purchase it, you'll be owning a great detector for yourself. Just wondering, where have you taken her detecting with the X Terra? If you try beaches with hardly any trash, she may get somewhere there. Try a quiet beach, where people just tend to walk on rather than congregate, as they lose coins from their pockets, which drop into the sand, so they're the targets you'll be looking for, without all the pull tabs and crown caps to make it frustrating for her. I'd even try a few small parks with monkey bars or swings, where children are likey to hang upside down on these and lose coins from their pockets onto the ground. The coins shouldn't be too deep to dig. I wouldn't give up on the X Terra 30 yet. All the best with it.

umm let me see here, but if im in all metal mode and i get a -9 or -8 but a high tone in cond mode that just means its high ferrous. so if i were to ignore the number and just go by the high tone then id be diggin nails all day, unless its possible to get a -9 or -8 w/ a low tone in cond mode. see i dont know if the tones can change w/ the numbers or if a particular tone is assigned to that number.

G'day Frank. I've got over 200 hours on the X-Terra 30 and only 6 hours on an XS Explorer. If you want to hunt beaches with the X-Terra 30, then there is a coil that is identical the the Quattro, which in theory, should give similar depth to the Quattro. The Quattro should go an inch or 2 deeper due to the fact that it has more than 1 frequency that it can put out.
The Quattro will give you a more refined metre reading and has a better tone system than the 30, however, with the 10 and a half inch round DD coil (in the medium frequency) you will find that the X-Terra will cover more real estate and it is lighter than the Quattro.
It depends what you want out of the detector, the X-Terra will find pretty much what the Quattro can, but you will dig more junk to do it.
Mic Evans.
