Quattro n Gold

seeknfind

New member
Hi - I'm a new user in UK.

I have had Quattro for 18 months, so still a greenhorn. I was dissapointed today when a fellow detectorist said the Q... would not hit gold targets (by the way I've not found any gold yet). He said I'd have to open up the discrimination - killing everything down to -9.

With -9 to 0 open I guess the machine will be singing!

I usually run with -10 to -4 blanked in Coin/Jewellry mode and sensivity either 16/17 or Auto.

Is this guy being fair or is he one of those who just could drive the machine properly?

Cheers

How ya doin seekinfind? I like your finders name.. It sure fits metal detecting, but as to your question about gold, I'm not the expert on it, Golden and some of the others are, but I have scanned a few gold rings that my friends had and of the two I "air scanned", I came up with a +19 on the one that had some "mixed" gold in it (different kinds of gold), and another lady's ring I scanned, was around a +7. I'm not "sure" if you'd need to open it up all the way down to a -9. I wouldn't think you'd need to go below 0, but I could be wrong. I'd ask the "big guys" about that one, but I also scanned a friend of mines different gold nuggets, (again as an air scan in his living room), and it seemed like in order to pick up a signal on one about the size of a BB, I had to get pretty darn close, maybe 3 or 4 inches or less. I don't remember for sure, but the smaller any target is, the tougher it is to read it. I also hear some very fine silver or gold chains can be a "toughie" again probably because they;re "fine braided" and fairly small, but don't just give up on the gold. "Q" will read it, if it's big and close enough, but the bigger the piece is the further away you can read it. Just as an adjunct, Minelab makes some "killer" gold detectors, that apparently are second to none for a serious gold hunter, but they're not cheap. I think Golden owns one, and I've seen them on the web site for as much as 2 or 3 grand or more, but they're specifically geared to deal with all the problems and nuances with fine nuggets and stuff, like hot rocks and all the rest, but........:O, if you look as some of the old "achieves" on the Quatro section, you should be able to find many pictures of gold coins and rings people have found at different places over the years, as proof that it will find gold. Marc.

They Quattro is great on gold, don't be fooled by who ever is giving you this false info. Gold will be all over the ranges dependant on its make up. My wedding ring comes in somewhere in the 20's. A while ago someone posted a photo of rings they found on a craft mat with the inch marks noting where they read on the quattro and they filled the mat.

Cheers Marc

I am going to ignore the guys comments and work the quattro, I'd be pretty lucky to find a gold ring, etc. Anyhow, I enjoy using the machine and as I said I'm still learning.
Cheers from South west UK

Thanks Black Davy - I'm sure your on the ball! I have done some tests today with gold rings and not a problem to detect!
Cheers

Thanks for throwin' this post in here Davy. I kind of thought the gold numbers might be all over the spectrum. I remember Mike from VA, or someone a couple of years back saying to just leave it wide open when your on the beach where the gold rings are, because of the huge variance of numbers. Marc

I'm excited for you, Seekinfind! Make sure you get Andy Sabische's book: Mastering the Quatro, if you don't already have it, and read it slowly and thoroughly, and you won't be sorry. Sounds like your well on your way, and I honestly think this still is one of the best all around detectors in the world. That's just my opinion, but it's pretty hard to beat. Remember too, you can notch out any number you want to or leave it wide open. It's your choice, and don't forget about the cross-saving of the audio, which they don't tell you about in the instructions, only in Andy's book or some earlier posts here in the Quatro Forum. Marc P.S. I should say they didn't talk about the audio cross-saving in my owners manual from about 3 or 4 years ago. Mine lab may have updated it by now. I'm not sure.

Cheers on the post - phew not been on for ages - still got the quattro - still learning. Cheers

You know I was just re-reading some of these posts and I'll bet you might not only have gold burried some places in the United Kingdom, but probably some pretty old coins and/or artifacts? Just curious. Marc Trainor.
