Has anyone noticed their hand grip squeaking? I just went out tonight for a little while and noticed that the hand grip has a noticeable squeak when gripped and released. I can now feel the plastic sides flex (gives) where it gives a little squeak. I have not noticed this before and have roughly 20 hours on the machine.

As I was examining the squeaky grip I also noticed that every single one of the screws holding the two sides together are corroded and white.

Just me or is this common?

My hand grip squeaks too so I guess thats normal. As for the screws, I saw this covered by Minelab in an earleir thread. The white stuff on your screws is not actually corrosion. Minelab stated that the screws are all coated so they wont corrode so the white stuff you see is just surface crud. When I saw the first post about this white stuff I figured Minelab couldn't have possibly overlooked the issue of corrosive screws on an amphibious unit and turns out they didn't.

So, I would say both of the "findings" you mentioned are normal. Hope this helps -Marc

They told VAMAX that salt will do that to the screws.

I would agree except for the fact the detector has never been in salt (or fresh) water.

Marc,

I am looking for the Minelab site where they talk about the screws. I have read it before and now can't find it. I hope they can fix the squeak as it gets to be annoying, especially when you are detecting for a while. I can feel it shift in my hand and throws me off. It is a little thing, but there none the less.

Thanks

Found it:

CTX screw discolouration

The external screws on the CTX3030 are marine grade 316 stainless steel. These are then blackened for cosmetic purposes. It has come to our attention that a batch of blackened screws used in the initial production run was supplied to Minelab with a faulty blackening process. The issue is typically highlighted when the unit is immersed for some time into sea-water.

The result is that on effected screws the black coating pits and comes off; this is only cosmetic. However, it should not be occurring and certainly affects the overall look of the detector.

CTX 3030 screw discoloration

This pitting will not affect the integrity of the underlying screw or the detector itself.

Should any customer find that any of the screws on their CTX3030 exhibit the effect as shown in the example above, then please contact your regional Minelab Customer Care Office (contact details are on the Minelab website) and we will arrange, at no charge, to have the screws replaced.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

You may want to ask to have them replaced as this is not normal.

I would also check that with flexing in the hand grip that your shaft is not wearing, was a post about this but gone now.

I have not. I plan to do that today. I don't see how the tightness would affect it though as it is on the top of the grip where the to halves meet. One side gives when you pressure down on it slightly, the other is solid.

Has anyone ever talked to a Minelab CSR?

I waited on hold for 20 minute today only to be told that they would take my name and number so a technician could get back to me in 24 hours. Why bother pressing 1 for technical issues in the first place if all I get is a call center who knows nothing.

Your experience is unusual and it is due to the fact that they are moving buildings the next couple of days. I usually get someone on the phone very quickly but I called Minelab a couple of days ago and they told me that they are moving buildings and will be a little slow for the next few days.

Sorry to hear about your call but I'm sure that if you give them a call early next week, you will have a very different experience as they will be a bit more settled. -Marc

Marc,

Thanks for the info. Good to know as I am a stickler on customer support.

For support I always speak with Darin Brown over at Minelab in Chicago. He is a great guy and always gets back to me quickly and takes care of me. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience but I assure you that Minelabs customer service is second to none. Minelab has always taken great care of me and I have nothing to gain saying it if it wasn't true.

It sucks that your first contact with them was a long wait on the phone as that is not typical at all and I assure you that customer service should not be of any concern as Minelab is TOPS! -Marc

I met several of the customer service guys this weekend at the Minelab conference. Great guys! I have had many dealings with them and over the phone and email and they are always outstanding. Getting to meet them strengthened my opinion even more. They will get you fixed!

Sounds like they are in between moving right now.

Good to know Bart. I sent them a note about this a couple days ago and have not heard from them yet. I will give it to Monday before I call the coroporate office.

but the slat in your sweaty hand could do it ,,,,

You are lumping three separate things together..
1. Engineering / design flaws,
2. Quality control at time of manufacturing & assembly
3. Customer support after the sale..

It seems we have problems with all 3... #1, handle cutting into shaft, #2 coating on screws & #3, poor customer support ... wildherre
