A Arkie Relic Hunt, of course.

I drove to Carlisle this morning, on a invite from my new Forum
found friend, Grease Monkey. He was gracious enough to invite
me to hunt with him at a couple of his hunting sites.

Here

Tabdog: What an excellent report. You should go into the book writting business. Entertaining, amusing and informative. All good traits of an author. Very nice finds, but must have been humiliating to have the Grease Monkey put you to shame like that. Humility is good. Improves ones character. Only in the mid 60's here in Californy today. Appeared a bit cooler than that in Arkie land. Congrats. JH

Go get em guys.........

My favorite is your lead cargo seal. I love lead cargo seals.

Take that one and soak it in a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution for 12 to 24 hours.

Take it out and scrub it with a tooth brush embedded with baking soda (don't skimp on the baking soda).

Rinse it in fresh water and tamp dry it with a clean rag. The details should become more clear.

Congrats on the fantastic finds Tabdog! You did very well indeed. Looks like a great hunt from both of you, Beale.

I never saw a close-up picture of you before Tabdog. You look just like a pretty version of my brother!!! Nice story tabdog. Jim

Thanks Jim,

That makes me feal good to have compliments like that.

Not at all. If this old bald headed coot can just keep up with that young
buck, I'm happy.

Besides, he has a BH that looks like he drags it behind his truck..lol

I came out with a coveted bale seal!!!!

Here's a site about bale seals,

Pretty cool, hugh???

That's a first for me.

Also the first time I got a pin fire cartdrege from tha 1860's.

From the start of the 1860's, several gunsmiths and inventors set about
preparing a center-fire cartridge prototype. Among them was the French

Gee Tabdog, I didn't know you were fighting an age gap with the Grease Monkey. Sorry about hurtin your feelings. But I can see how you would be happy with your finds. Nice informative post on the rim fire. Myself being a youngin (66) out west here, my conception of rim fire is the current 22 cal shell. Nice clear pic on the protruding rim fire you chacterize. My idea of a pin fire is what we have today in the center fired cartridges, but obviously it must be something else. Didn't you post a pic of a pin you found in an earlier posting? Have a good one. Coolin off in Cal, low 60's or high 50's today. JH

Here is a whole pin fire cartridge. You can see that
the pin is inserted into the casing.

So, how does it work.

Simple.

You can see tha pin being inserted.

Here is inside tha casing before tha percussion cap
is in place.

I cleaned tha bale seal some.

I can make out some of it now.

I am soaking it again.

I had to look again cuz I couldn't remember any dog pics - well sure enough there it was again. You don't skip a beat:look:

Now that I have gone back and reread tabdogs post, I see I was confused at first. So if I'm understanding it correctly this time, its the pin fire cartridge that has the protrusion on the side and you only eluded to the rim fire and center fire as sending its development to the grave. I like those bale seals also.I guess they are a little bit like the seals that Edison puts on our meters to keep folk from tapping into the power before being read by the meter. A guarantee that the contents have not been tampered with. JH
