Purpose of brass ball

Near the center of this picture is a 2" brass ball dug with the rest of these relics. Lots of crust built up on it like it's been in the ground for an extended period of time. I know it's brass because I nicked it a little when I dug it. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Cool batch of relics.

Take a picture from a few angles of the ball by itself with good lighting and something for size reference.
Is it solid? any holes or attachments?

Looks like I exaggerated the size. Here's a closeup. There's no holes and no attachment points that I can see. It's heavy, so I'm assuming it's solid.

Thanks for the picture...
Boy I was hoping for some more signs of what it might have been.
It could have been for an anti backflow valve, but....

You didn't see any brass monkeys running around did you??

I'm afraid I'm of no help sorry.
