Pure Greed

I have found that a number of so called Legitimate Medal Detector Sales are now listing "Long Range Treasure Detectors".

Of course they are asking exorbitant prices for them.

I can take two pieces of copper wire, bend them into an L shape and find more than one can find with the junk that they are selling.

I personally will never make a purchase from any detector sales company that lists these things.

Notice the old fashioned automobile antenna.

I need one them! My grandson can use it with his video games!!

What was it that P.T. Barnum said was born every day? Hahah. I knew somebody that purchased one about 25 or 30 years ago and our west Texas winds had that thing swinging around like a weather vain. I can't get the picture out of my mind seeing him say " See, it's ponting to that jar of silver!" As he "helped" it point to the known location.

Rather than using expensive copper wire try cutting a coat-hanger into 2 pieces and bending it into L shaped pieces. It probably would work just as well. Best of luck and...

Squirrel I have never tried a coat hanger but back when I worked in the Home building industry I kept two pieces of copper wire handy as I could find water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, underground telephone lines and underground electrical lines with them. Never tried them on coins but I think a Real Detector would work better. I heard or read somewhere that someone had offered a Million Dollars to anyone who could prove that the Electroscope actually worked. Never heard of anyone collecting the Million.

George, some people have that talent. You obviously are one of them. I tried it and got poked in the eye hahah. Seriously, I knew a guy that used the L shaped coat hanger and he had success finding water, pipes etc. He said that he could find anything that he wanted to if he concentrated on it. I think that if I had that talent, I'd get my L rods out and go to Arizona and find the Lost Dutchman's Mine! Since I don't, I guess I'll have to make my fortune with my detector - one memorial at a time hahahah. Best of luck and...

Isn't that the truth!! I bought my Grandson a nice detector and it sits in the closet . Both my grandson and his Dad are video game junkies .
Every spare moment of their time is used "killing Zombies or whatever". If the power grid ever does go out I believe there are going to be a lot of rude awakenings .

Being a retired Electronics Engineer, i am very familiar with electronic circuits having designed many circuits for the consumer, industrial and commercial markets during the course of my career.
With that said, wasn't easy but i dug up a schematic of one of those so called long range devices. What a bunch of BS! Really a joke!
Components going to nowhere just to make it look like they did. Components with no purpose in the existing circuit. I could go on, save your money.

Far as coat hanger divining rods, i can tell you all they do work. I located my old well pump pipes to prepare for my new well. Buried cables too.
I was so impressed i experimented with those rods further, yep they even detected coins laying on the ground. H'mm!

Iron I have never tried finding coins with a pair of L shaped copper wires but I did use them when I was the Supervisor for a Home builder. Saved a lot of time for crews that were putting in plumbing to the houses. For some reason the various utilities got a little bent out of shape when you cut their lines/Pipes. Used them one time when I was running pipe from the meter to my mothers house to find the underground telephone lines. I have a lot more faith in them than what I do one of those "Long Range Detectors". At least the rods work and I have read many reports on the fact that the "Long Range Detectors" are just a way to separate the uninformed from his or her money.

Divining does actually work.
I've never tried it on coins but now I'm thinking about it !
Could turn out to be an awesome free metal detector.

I tried it by placing coins on the ground. The rods detected them every time along with every other buried object in the ground.
Haven't experimented with burying the coins at depth so far.
The problem is that they'll detect every piece of metal and maybe other non-metalic stuff in the ground too.
The trick would be to get the rods to somehow discriminate objects in the ground... beyond my pay scale! lol

Having said that, they still might be useful in locating caches in relatively non-junk areas.

How about one of these? They are only about $10,000

10 Grand? No problem, gonna go out and order one right now!

I was once in a metal detecting shop one time which had one of those LRD'ers on display. The owner gave a 'seemingly' impressive PT Barnum demo.
I asked if i could rent it for a couple days to try it out!
Nope, you got to buy it for $3000. That said it all considering this particular shop rents out all kinds of metal detectors and mining equipment.

Howdy zippy4zz--

I've been known to dig holes in Big Spring, Stanton, Midland, Odessa, Goldsmith, Crane, McCamey and surrounding areas. Next time you are going to be in the neighborhood send me a PM? Best of luck and...

I work in a water dept and carry divining rods in my work truck. Also carry a expensive pipe locator but sometimes if wire isn't run along with the utility, those expensive ones won't work. I use those rods all the time. Most of the time it's very accurate, but it has failed me also. Sucks when you get a solid hit and spend a hour digging up a road to find nothing! Customers always wanna know how they work!

Folks are very inquisitive at the beach when they see someone metal detecting. I am frequently asked if I am finding anything Good. My standard reply is "Not Today". That satisfies most folks.

Now my question is what would they think if I took divining rods and went walking down the beach? Would they think that I had totally lost my limited mental capacity? They might even call the Cops to come take me away.

But it does make one wonder what the rods would do at the beach. However I do not have the nerve to try.

I will stick to using them to find water lines, electric lines, phone lines Etc.

Hi GeorgeinSC--

Why not give it a try? If you are questioned, simply tell the truth that you are conducting scientific research on the efficacy of divining rods and that you intend to publish the results of your "experiments" on a well known internet forum (here). It could be as much fun interacting with the questioners as it is detecting. To be on the safe side, though, I would bring the detector along too - just in case you strike out with the L Rods. Best of luck and...

Hey George if you're chicken, try it on a bad cold drizzly day when no one is around. :)
In fact, the less crowded, the better the more practical to use the rods.

Myself, i wouldn't give a sh!t what any one thinks! I might try it at a couple parks next season too.
Take a stroll these days at the local big shopping mall and see the various creatures walking around! And no one apparently gives a sh!t!

Be aware though from my experiments, those rods will detect junk along with keepers.
They'll also detect things really deep like buried tree parts, water tables but possibly also... old buried pirate treasure.
Let us know if you have any success with it!
