Purchasing used equipment

OG

New member
Apologies if this ? belongs elsewhere- Has anyone purchased used Tesoro equipment ( I'm looking for a Vaquero), from Ebay? I have seen some really good deals on Vaqueros on ebay and I understand that one has to be aware that some sellers are less than "honest" when it comes to evaluating the condition of what they have for sale. I have also seen Vaqueros for sale in the classified section here on the Tesoro site but I have always been too late to take advantage. If the lifetime warranty transfers to a new owner, then I don't see a huge issue buying used from somewhere other than here, if not can anyone recommend a source for reliable used equipment? Like I said I understand the importance of "buyer beware" but thought maybe someone had a source that they trust for used gear.

Thanks, OG

Cannot suggest a place to purchase a used Tesoro detector as i live across the pond, but one thing i am 100% certain off is the fact that the warranty 'cannot' be transfered top another customer, its only for the original person who bought the detector, the only thing that i can suggest if you are not sure is either buy a new one or a used one from a dealer, albeit it may cost a little more but you usually get say a 3 months warranty and this would give you some piece of mind.

i went with a new one from a large dealer (kellyco) that way there is no worries over it. if there is a problem, you are covered and you have the warranty if a future one happens. the warranty is for the original buyer. i understand they will check it out for 50 dollars plus the shipping costs. so add that on to the used price and not have the warranty. i decided just to pay the extra and bought a new vaquero. like mega said "piece of mind" was worth the cost.

Warranty is for the original purchaser only. If the item has been resold, no warranty, or so I have been told.

I have 3 Tesoro detectors, 2 are over 16 years old according to their manufacturer date. I was not the original owner of either one. I could be the 4th or 5th owner or maybe more. They have continued to perform flawlessly. The only detector I bought new was my compadre. Tesoros are built to last. I plan to buy my next Tesoro used. In fact if I had the means to buy ken's vaquero right now I would. I have full confidence in buying a used Tesoro off this site. Stick around and you will get to know some of the people on this site. Sure is easier to buy when you see someone has been on this site for a while and has something to sell. You get to know the people a little better on this site than say on fleabay. IMHO. Good luck with what ever you choose.

Typically you you only have two issues buying used Tesoro:

1st....you want to make sure you don't buy anything with wobbly pots. You might get a unit with a wobbly pot and it will work fine, but then you have to deal with it when you want to resale.
2nd....sometimes folks (me included) tweak the ground balance pots for our ground conditions, and they don't set it back when they resale.

Thats about all you need to worry about, other than cigerette smoke.

Just ask the right questions and you will do fine.

I've purchased numerous used detectors, mostly Tesoros, and have been fortunate in that I haven't had a problem yet. I do try to buy at a price that even if Ihad to pay for a repair, I'm still coming out okay compared to new. However, there is, of course, some risk in this approach so let your budget be your guide.

I have also bought used Tesoros off this site. I never had any problems. I have also sold on this site. I sold one one time that the person buying it said something was with it. I returned his money and he returned the detector. No questions asked. I than sent it into Tesoro to have it checked out. I don't feel right sending someone a bad detector. .. I think you can truct most of the old timers on here... KEN Ind.

I bought my Compadre new. I bought my Sidewinder Micromax, Tigershark, and now a Cibola that I'm waiting to be shipped off of ebay. No problems so far. Sent the Sidewinder to Tesoro to be tuned to a new 8" coil. Cost me $50. That is $50 well spent IMHO. Sidewinder is a sweet little rig. All the coils I bought new from suppliers. Never owned anything except Tesoros. Can't wait to get the Cibola.

I've bought several used and many new machines. I've inly had one used machine deal go bad and it happened to be a water machine and a Tesoro. A big part of owning a Tesoro for me is getting the lifetime warranty, so from now own I'm only buying new Tesoros or a brand with transferable warranty. Shucking 2-$300 out to make a machine usable after buying it can be frustrating.

I bought a new Compadre from a dealer in MN and received it 4 days later at my home in S.W. Ohio on June 06, 2011.

It worked fine for 3 years 7 months until I got it out of the cupboard for it's first hunt in April, 2015, installed a new 9V battery and discovered there was no audio sound when I turned the dial ON. So I called Tesoro and the Technician said to send it in to the factory for inspection and repair. I mailed the Control Box with my new battery, 5.75" Coil and Cable back to the factory on April 14, 2015 and received everything back in 3 weeks on May 11, 2015, all repaired at N/C under the Lifetime Warranty. It cost me just $13.85 for shipping and insurance to send in for repair.

There was something inside the coil that had to be fixed and the coil was then re-assembled and the audio works fine now !

I'm happy with Tesoro service ! :)

I have bought many used Tesoro's,had 2 that needed sent back and the only reason for sending them back was to have them re-balanced,not that they probably needed it but because the machines were older and it was probably about time, kinda like your vehicle, every thing is gonna need maintenance once in awhile. If the person your buying from used has taken care of his/her equipment, then I see no worries down the road, not saying something won't happen sooner or later but it's your decision whether you go new or used, and the $50 Tesoro charges is not a whole heck of alot, most spend that amount in batteries in a years time, not to mention gas to get to your hunting spots.

You may want to try the metal detector companies that are sponsored by Finds Mall. They do have some excellent deals on used equipment, but you gotta work fast cuz deals go by quick!

I'd let them know by calling requesting your wants in a detector, coils, accessories, etc. Most likely they'll give you a call in what comes in. Tesoro has the best warranty in the MD industry.

Good Luck,

TC-NM

I have bought a lot of used equipment some like new, never had problems with Tesoro especially older models built like tanks..... pics tell you a thousand words of its condition and use, check a persons feedback, talk to in person if you can, or by email, if something doesn't sound right don't buy, trust your gut feelings. Most fellow detecting guys are pretty descent to deal if they been around. or buy from a dealer of used detectors who is reputable and honest.....just my two cents worth.
