Pulltabs and Ramblings

I think all of us that enjoy metal detecting have a dream machine that will not detect iron or aluminum. At least I think we do but then it seems that people would rush out and clean up on coins and jewelry and then what? I am sure there would be some places and good targets missed but I wonder just how far it could go and then we would be looking for a new hobby.

That is not going to happen with electromagnetic filed used to detect and id targets. A major reason is because some alloys are going to have the same affects on a magnetic field as silver, copper, and gold. Discrimination is a best bet gamble where we try to load the deck in our favor. I think we can do a pretty good job of doing that and with experience find our share of the goodies.

A pulltab that reads 8/22 and a gold ring that reads 8/22 looks the same to the detector. It is the operator that has to do something and that is dig it or leave it in the ground. Pulltabs and a lot of aluminum products have very poor quality control. The alloy varies all over the place and can hit just about anywhere but mostly in the nonferrous area of the display. Gold has many different alloys and because jewelry comes in all sizes and shapes it can hit anywhere on the display but aging mostly in the nonferrous area of the display. I have a can full of pulltabs and two of them that look exactly the same will read very differently. My wedding bans reads nothing like my class ring. I have mentioned this before but I have one gold ring that I cut the band and it is totally transparent to the detector. It cannot be detected no matter how the detector is set.

I evolve with the technology and at the present use the Learn function for a specific site. I think this will include some skewing for the soil and give me the best shot at gold rings and still let me reject most pulltabs. However, I wake up in a cold sweat thinking I rejected that $5,000 gold ring full of precious stones thinking it was a pulltab. Ha We are all in the same boat on pulltabs and rings so all I really know is to try and load that deck the best we can.

It does sound like a dream machine in many ways. If they would turn it into a water machine I would buy it for sure. I am happy with my Explorer and when I hunt we become as one. I have many hours on it and know what it is telling me most of the time.
