I was kind of hoping that a 70 user might have answered your question by now. I seem to remember that Des dune wrote about pull tabs giving multiple hits when using a high frequency coil. You'll find the article that he wrote it in in FAQFAQ.
Personally, I use a 30 so I'm looking at a different way of telling these targets apart. Here in Oz, our 10c coins are on the same notch area as the square pull tabs (bouncing around from 12 to 16). There are a couple of give aways that I find helps to sort them out. A pull tab tends to give multiple hits more than coins do. Also, if you bring the coil over the target from several different directions, a coin give mostly give you a steady reading and a pull tab will cause the numbers to jump all over the place. They tend to do that anyway, but if the tab is doing a good job of masquerading as a coin, then this seems to be a good way of revealing what it really is. It's not fool proof, just improves your ability to discriminate what you have under the coil.
