Pull tabs

Member
Hello everyone
I am new to the MXT and detecting. I have been out a few times and I am digging a lot of pull tabs. I noticed when VDI shows 16, 18 or 20 it is almost always a nickel, but at 22,24 & 26 it is always a pulltab. Do you always dig these higher VDI numbers? Also do you always dig foil? There sure is a lot foil and pulltabs.
Thanks Steve

Steve, just dig every thing, once you get the trash out of the area its alot easier to make good finds, I dig every signal, it helps me know my detector. Plus you really never know whats there until you dig. and good finds give different signals at different depths.:pulltab::thumbup:

Ok thanks. Just trying to go out alot. I live in Oklahoma City. Went out to a park today, but the wind was blowing about 40 mi. an hour. had a hard time hearing the sounds.
Thanks Steve

Hey man I live Around Tulsa area it sure was windy today try some head phones it helps alot:detecting:

Yes In my experience with the MXT I usually did pull tabs in that range. I have found several rings in that range. Rings are tricky to find especially since pull tabs are in that range as well. Digg'em and you will pull up rings eventually. Nice talking with ya.

Headphone are the way to go! You can hear alot of fainter signals. by the way I live in Muskogee its been wet and windy here.:detecting:

Hi there. I was just wondering. Where is Muskogee? It sounds like an interesting place?

Those pulltabs are driving me nuts. I am not digging the ones that are within 1" I hope i'm not going over good stuff. I have only been detecting about 1 month> i bought my detector last fall, but didn't get to use it until this spring. Last week I found a 14k gold Tourmaline ring in my front yard, I think it showed 5 cents - ring and a sterling silver necklass at a local park yesterday. I think i'm figuring it out. Thanks again for the fast replies.

In my experience pulltab readings that are 2" or 1" are usually just that: PULLTABS. Gold and other more valuable metals are heavier and tend to sink deeper into the ground in time. But hey like are friend said." Maybe it's best to dig them all. You never know if someone just just lost a ring and it's only 1-2 inches into the ground. What do you think?:pulltab:

Most of my gold rings are found at sports fields with a few in school yards. I usually don't hunt beaches. Well the last 20 gold rings have been shallow. My last gold ring was found 1" down in a soccer field in rock hard ground on a trip to Texas (read 24). Most of the rings I have found have been no deeper than 3". On these fields because of the watering and mowing tabs cab be this deep or deeper.

Two days ago I was hunting a sports field. I had read this post so I kept all the pieces that read 18 or 20, and gave a solid reading in both directions. I had a handful. One type that gives a nickel reading was the round aluminum disc the tab knocks out of the can. Another was broken or bent tabs. I pulled a chunk of slaw at 4" that read a perfect 20.

I found 1115 nickels last year, so I can find nickels. My point is if you don't dig 22 to 26 VDI's you will miss gold rings and you will miss some nickels. With that said, in really trashy areas I get lazy and don't dig all signals. Rob

TINPAN,YOU SEEM TO REALLY KNOW YOUR STUFF. QUESTION,IF YOU WANTED A LIGHT WEIGHT MACHINE,WOULD YOU GET A PRISM V,A MXT OR A M-6? HOW DEEP DO THEY GO IN YOUR OPINION? I DO SCHOOLS,PARKS,AND BEACH WHEN POSSIBLE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

I would get the MXT in my opinion its the best all round detector on the market Also get the 6 X 10 DD coil I think it's better then the stock 9.5 that comes with it,and a coil for trashy areas, like the 4 X 6 DD Elliptical by whites, or if depth is what you want and good in trashy areas, I would go with the 4.5 X 7 EXcelerator. You can get the best deals from Kellyco, they will up grade your detector with any coil you want when ordering it. Good people to work with, and no I don't work for them. just have great experience with them.:whites::clapping:

The MXT isn't the lightest one , but is is the best turn on and go by far. 6 X10 is a great coil in mineralized soil

I learned a valuable lesson on pull tabs, There is an old golf coarse that is being cleared for commercial development,I said to myself this would be a great place
for some coins and maybe some jewlry.made few good coin finds but spent a lot of time digging pull tabs.
I forgot how much beer had been consumed on a 30 year+ old golf coarse. learned a lot on discrim.but will return for more fun and blisters.
