pull tabs??

Big Boys Hobbies

Well-known member
I'm trying to figure out where pull tabs ring in at and what they sound like? Are the close to gold rings and do they have a similar sound?

First there is the need to ask you a few questions. Are you new to metal detecting? Do you now have an Explorer? Do you have a selection of different pulltabs? As for the answer to your second question, yes pulltabs and gold rings are generally in the same conductive category and therefore if a certain pulltab and gold ring have the same conductivity then they will sound the same. Even if one were able to tell the difference between the 2 in an air test, that difference would not help once they are in the ground. There are ways to discriminate unwanted items out with the Explorer but one has to use disc. wisely otherwise good objects will be disc. out as well. There has not been a detector made yet that can distinguish between pulltabs and gold rings. If you are going to go for rings, you will have to dig some pulltabs.

Not to return the smart @%& comments but if i had a Explorer wouldn't i be able to answer my questions myself?

I have a whites mxt and am thinking of an upgrade to the Ex II. I noticed in the manual it can specifically discriminate pull tabs but on the other hand keep rings and jewelery. On my mxt if u take one out you lose them all. I was wondering if the Ex II was different or is it best to just "learn" certain pull tabs out.

Thanks for the answers in advance.

Your last statement would be correct. You would learn the tabs and then disc them out. Look back thru the threads about a monthj or so and you will see some very good advise by Cody, Captain Kirk, Chris, and others on the learn function.

Go to the search tab above and search Authors for Cody, Learn, and 90 days you will get plenty of answers to your question there. Hope it helps.

AK,

Yes, you can use the LEARN function and do a pretty good job of rejecting pull tabs. When doing this with a very large sample of pull tabs, then a large portion of the screen will be "blacked" out. This will result in missing a very high percentage of the gold rings.

I think that any particular hunting site will generally have only a smaller subset of the pull tab universe. This means that you can start out digging everything in the gold region and when you find a particular pull tab, then you can use the LEARN function to reject that particular type.

My general approach in a new area is to forget about gold and just darken the entire bottom 80% of the screen. Then use the LEARN function to open up the region of nickels and Indian heads. This allow me to suck out most of the rest of the good stuff. Then go back over the area to seek out the gold.

I am sorry you took it that way. I was trying to give an honest answer to your questions, but needed to know about your experiance. I don't see how it was smart @%& of me to ask if you have an Explorer? I don't think the Explorer can't disc. out pulltabs and keep jewelry and rings. The others who have answered haven't claimed that it can either. The Explorer is a nice machine and if one has the patience to learn it, I don't think will be disappointed. HH and good luck!
