Pull Tab Pieces

Today I taught the XS to accept numerous old
and new US coins. Still, the XS registers pull
tab piece as a nickle and a Ring as a penny. Whats
going on? They consistantly do this, old rusty
bottle caps as a nickle?? I'm using the smartscreen, fast,20 manual,gain6,variablity 10
response ferrous. Seems to false alot (hotrocks).
If the above were coins....I'd be rich

nickels show up one thin line above the pinpoint bar and slightly to the left of the middle.

in a test,I passed about 60 or so pieces of gold under the coil in the `learn` mode and developed a pattern on the screen. Then I took a bunch of pulltabs(complete and broken)of all different types and ran them under the coil to`reject`them. The result was that just about all the tabs appeared on the screen in the same locations as the gold.To bad the tabs arent worth the same as the gold!!! All detectors I have used register large gold rings as a penny. That is why we dig stinking lincoln. Nickles and small gold rings register as pull tabs and small foil, that is why I don't dig pull tabs at picnic areas but I do dig foil. At the beach I dig all signals cause the salt water will eat up the pull tabs. You will never set up your machine perfect. You have to play the odds at the table and leave the slot machine, that is why I bought a periscope to dig less holes and increse my odds.

i found my first gold yesterday (wedding band)..
it registered at a consistent "5" on the digit meter. pulltabs were coming up at 7 or 8. could i have been missing some gold by not digging all 7's & 8's? is there somthing else to listen for in tone or watch on the smartscreen for gold?

You have to work for it, unfortunately. Gold shows up from tinfoil to coins, depending upon the size of the piece.
Actually, if I had to choose to dig one or the other, I would concentrate my efforts on tinfoil. Women's rings are more frequently found in that range and you might get something with a rock. Also, the 'scope knows tinfoil You can just punch through it. Remember, though, that bands are very narrow and difficult to pinpoint even with a scope. If you never here the iron pulse on foil (typically just before you punch through the foil), you will have to dig.

At the beach, dig it all. You'll clean the beach and will definitely add to your jewelry collection!
Get a good beach shovel with a long 4' handle or longer and one where you can put your foot at the back of the shovel and push it in the ground with your foot. It saves the back and knees. Get out in the knee-deep to mid thigh deep water and go to work. One gold band or one gold "anything" makes digging all the pulltabs on the beach worthwhile.
I dug a huge gold band (1/2 oz) three weeks ago. It registered 22 on the digital and fell in at 1/3 down the smartscreen in the middle of the quadrant.
Gold is erratic. If you want to find gold, you will have to dig--even with the state-of-the-art XS, it's all over the screen.
