Who needs a speaker?Tesoro, could advance one more notch, buy doing away with speakers, this is one reason i love Tesoro its weight, and ability to pack down in small bag you could put in a First graders book bag.Lets face it real treasure hunting can take you to some far out of the way places, you think i want to pack up a minelab Sovereign, and hike through Charleston,SC Swamps with it,shaft only breaks down in two parts, tesoro three, the Sov would barely fit in large backpack, people look at me like im carrying around a bazooka,i guess the minelab would be good if you wanted to fight of a gator, but would rather run with Tesoro, what real treasure hunter uses a speaker, they are heavy, let dirt in,and serve no purpose for me,get with it designers this is 2009,do not put speakers in detectors, just because it's been done from begining.Chuck.

Hmmm ... two wires ... snip, snip; tape the ends. Take out speaker and cover speaker grill with clear packing tape to offer a little bit of dust and splash resistance. Save speaker in case you want to put it back in later.

Sounds like a good plan but it would only take about a minute for someone to p@ss & moan about spending that kind of $$$ on a detector then find out it has no speaker. One good thing about having a speaker is if your headphones happened to crap out you can still hunt. I suppose they could make it an option. Steve.

Snake country could be a problem for Headphone only detector.??????????????????

In the hot summer, me and headphones (good ones) don't get along. I might could go a small red neon light that varies in intensity of the signal!

Snakes are a problem. I live in Jasper County S.C. We are said to have more poisonous snake per square mile than anywhere in the nation. I DO NOT use headphones in the summer while woods hunting.

This is also why I stopped using Nautilus detectors. (no speaker). I wear snake protection but just don't like the thought of being hit on the leg by one of these big rattlers. Would rather be able to hear them if possible.

Jerry

Thanks for the input guys, just bored,on house arrest for camping out in abanded cottage,i have used good quality walkman style earbuds for years, can hear faint detc sigs and also being able to hear surroundings,i guess i was having visions of belt clip walkman style Tesoro detector, looks like there almost there, with a few modifications. Also have read in popular Treasure book how speaker magnets attract outside magnetic particles into the speaker and control housing and can really screw things up,also the magnet on speaker can mess with electron flow in circuits,Thanks for accepting me hear i can get a little wild at times, new to internet, also the earbuds do good in hot weather.Chuck

WOW!!!!,Some positive feedback,Yes JERRY GA It seems magnetic particles is a bigger issue than one would think, did some research and found the book which discusses this problem,I will type this quote from Charles garrett's book,Modern Metal Detectors:Speaker Contamination:contamination such as dirt, black magnetic magnetic sand, small metal shavings and other things can fall into a searchcoils cover or detectors speaker. This can cause erratic sounds that are very annoying and give the apperance of a faulty detector. It is easy to clean out a searchcoil cover but if magnetic particles are sticking to the speaker cone, turn the detector upside down so that the particles can fall out of the detector.Turn on the detector and adjust it to make a sound.Somtimes the vibrating effect of the speaker tone can loosen particles that have become magnetically attached to the speaker cone.A small magnet may pull the particles out.(i knew i read this somewhere).hope this helps,Can we just get rid or the speakers??????Chuck.

All that happens to mine if I dont tape over the speaker hole is it gets dirt inside machine. Yes I use a older model mounted below pole, and I dont always hip mount it!

I guess some people use the speaker without headphones for safety reasons, say they are hunting a area or neighborhood they arent used to!

You might look down on people who use a speaker instead of headphones, but Tesoro doesn't.

And I guarantee you Tesoro isn't writing off their business.

Personally, I use headphones most of the time.

But there are times (hunting with the kids) when I don't wear them.

If you are worried about dirt getting into your speakers then tape it up. I want speakers. I took some people out yesterday who had brand new Tesoro's. Without a speaker how would I teach them how to listen to a good tone. There are times when I want a speaker. I think the Tesoro detectors have just what is needed to detect with, not much more, not less. Try a DFX or a Minelab with all of the switches and different controls and settings, I have a new DFX and gave up on it. Have no idea of what half of the controls are supposed to do, plus it gives false reading every time it bumps anything and this is with gain set at two and AC sensitivity set below 70, and that is under what a lot of users recommend. Tesoro is great. Only thing I think they could use on their detectors is a volume control. I have had 38 years of metal detector speakers and would not buy one without a speaker. For one thing I have torn out speaker wires in the woods, without a speaker my hunt would end right then and there.
