Last month i was hunting a local park, when this reporter from the local paper, approched me. He asked if he could take some pics of me hunting, then asked if maybe i would let him video my finds and hunting. Well nothing was ever in the paper that i seen. But tonight he finnaly called me and set up the interview for wed nov 3. I want the public to know that we all arent bad guys tearing up the parks. IM going to show the proper way to dig holes and fill them back in, i also want to tell them about the trash we pick up and the sharp objects kids can step on.Ive heard both good and bad, but with all the states banning metal detecting in parks, its time the public knows what we do and why we do it, and the good that comes out of it. So please tell me what you would like me to say, there will be a video on there web page and i will post it for everyone to see thanks for your input ill make you proud thanks bryan.

I would comment on the historical aspect of the hobby, the research done, the effort put into finding a good spot.

Also comment on the general mores of the hobby, dig a plug, fill it in, leave it like you found it. (basically if you're doing it right nobody should be able to tell you were even there)

Collecting the trash, and junk is certainly a part of it as well, sort of a positive bycatch that most of us collect to dispose of properly.

I would also point out that the hobby is not about getting "rich", it's about combining an interest in lost history, numismatics, and some of us actually make the effort to document, and share that history with the local historical societies. There are also others that volunteer their time/toy for more serious matters like locating crime scene artifacts. (bullets, shell casings.. etc..etc)

Good take Aurium. Bswift, state a firm case regarding how most detectorists are consciensious. I've had alot of people and park directors tell me "No" even though I offered to show them how a good clean dig was done. It has frustrated me to no end! Make a statement and tell them to broadcast it on national TV!!!

A statement that responsible detectorists obtain permission prior to hunting would be benificial.

One thing I have picked up maybe several hundreds of from my parks is broken off bottlnecks with the screwcap on or even only the locking ring for the crewcap. There may be more glass in there but the necks are given away by the metal.

I have shown these to many people and all like to see them gone.

This is one of the things that are out there in the high numbers and can do great damage to small feets..

Show a few a make sure he gets a pic of them in the paper.

Show them all the garbage that a detectoist has to go through to pick up a penny, Any good finds slip it in your pocket and also show them the bottle of pain killer that we carry around.

I hate to be the one to say it but... be very careful what you say. Think about every word, every sentence. Reporters are well known to take part of a sentence out of context and make people look like they are saying something completely different from what they are saying. You may do a 30 minute interview and then find that 30 seconds of it shows up on TV... be very careful.

Keep it SIMPLE... don't talk too much or you may be sorry. You do not know what the reporter's agenda is.... but you can bet there is one and the story is not as simple as a reporter trying to find the truth. The reporter probably already has a POV and will, interview you, cut out parts and edit film to make it support that POV.

If I were you I would be very cynical and suspicious... it is better than being sorry.

Maybe I am completely wrong but I do not trust reporters any more than I trust politicians... and I don't trust politicians.

Remember it is YOU who will be on local TV so be careful.

What he said...

Could be a good thing but myself, I'm reluctant - reason.... Years ago while I was fishing at my hot sturgeon spot that I had for years, I was bringing in a sturgeon and a fella showed up to watch. I had to release it because we have a slot size (minimum & maximum), and I thought he was excited because he said he been up & down the river and I had the only fish he seen all evening. I thought I was getting info from him about whats going on up & down the river. Anyway, after I released the fish I had rigged up and tossed the rig in the water while he was continuing a friendly & what seem a curious conversation. Before he was about to leave, I had hook on a big one and he stuck around while I landed it. Many times folks stop to watch & no harm done.
Long story short - The next print of the Hunting & Fishing News there was a map of a good section of the river and a few star marks along the river. A star was at my spot, then there was an article associated to it. It described his experience with the 2 sturgeon I hooked and about the spot itself. After years of having that spot that did me so well, his article ruined it. I had no idea he was going to submit an article, but others paid attention to it and I wasn't able to access the spot the next 4-5 times afterward, so I gave up. Just ruined it all for me after many years of fishing it and never seen anyone ever there before.

Last year I hunted with a fella (detecting). We found a spot that was doing okay, nothing great but the finds gave a good feeling of potential to better finds. To me it was a typical hunt but he was excited. He agreed that we would go there together a few more times. Well he couldn't wait, knew I was working but off the coming Friday. So since I was working he decided to take 4 others along for a couple days of detecting before that Friday. They tore into the area I was starting to find some decent silver when we had left from before - just ruined it for me.

So now I have become reluctant in ways at times. I also no longer post pics of finds so I can't by mistake slip a pic that might give away the background.

If you have an article go out, I hope it goes well, but myself, I just couldn't pull it off. I just got sour thrown at me - not saying I would expect others to be the same, but be cautious and hope the outcome does right.

tab-nabit,

We had the same thing happen out here with a metal detecting location. An old homestead town. Was a great place to go picnic and detect. Then someone wanted their name in print and wrote an article about it in the W&E with directions and everything. It didn't even take a year for the place to get fenced up and No Trespassing signs everywhere. You can't even picnic around there anymore. This same guy comes back a two years later to hunt it and write another article and see his name in print and acts surprised that its no longer available, so he goes and writes about another location a little further down the road. Yep, you guessed it. Another lost site.

thanks for all the advice everyone. But its not about me getting publicity or giving up my secret hunting sight. My angle is showing most of us are responsible adults who care about are parks and proper digging will not harm our parks. But because of a few bad seeds we all are loosing are rights to hunt are parks.

I once wrote an article "letters to the editor" for our local newspaper in response to an article that had appeared a few days earlier about metal detecting at our local beach. I provided pictures of some of the trash I had removed (I do go far out of my way to scoop up all the pieces of a broken bottle and take it to the rubbish barrel), as well as explaining how my wife and I (my detecting buddy) had returned many class rings we had found at the beach. I also told about having found several weapons (knives, live ammunition, a rusted pistol, drug paraphernalia, even a MACHETE!), all of which had been removed from the sand where kids run barefoot every day. I came down hard on litterbugs, noting I had removed dozens of dirty diapers left on the beach by lazy moms. I tried my best to be honest about my finds, explaining that over the years I had found a few nice jewelry items, and that my clad finds probably averaged a couple or three bucks an hour on a good day.

What happened? My article was edited. The only thing left there was my statement about having found a few nice jewelry items over the years and that some detectorists picked up "some" trash from the beach. I was totally betrayed by the newspaper. NEVER AGAIN. These people are only interested in making a name for themselves and will spin whatever you have to say to meet their own agendas. If you're gonna give an interview, insist and seeing the finished product before it is aired before your approval to broadcast is given. And be VERY careful.

Interview over.
