Public grind........

New member
Just grinding it out in the usual public spots for a crumb here or there lately. These are from 4 hunts and I haven't been door knocking (or I should say...haven't had any success door knocking lately, rejections) or any trips to the big city. I have 1 permission I've been after for 2 yrs now that I hope will come thru and one other permission I got for an old hotel but I have to wait until the snowbird owner returns. Until then, or the courage for more door knocks returns, the public grind will continue.........

It looks like to me your doing pretty good for hitting public places.

What do you use to clean up those Buff's, they look pretty good?

Those find's look good to me! It doe's seem to be harder to get yard permissios since all the TV shows! Oh well, maybe just my imagination?!

There's a thread on the Metal Detecting forum from about a year ago that I commented on....dig deep, it's in there. I've been trying not to use the vinegar/salt portion as it sometimes really brings out the pitting on the nickels. I've been experimenting on my last 4 nickels with some Santeen with good success? BE CAREFUL and so far I use just a Q-tip dipped in Santeen and rub the coin for just a minute or two then wash off with water and scrub with an abrasive and a Scotch-Brite type pad. I don't do anything with the chemicals until after LOTS of scrubbing starting with steel wool then Scotch-brite pad along with the abrasive powder.....lots of elbow grease. If I think I can take it further then the Santeen....small amount and quickly get if off of there with more scrubbing with the abrasive? Just remember that you can't undo whatever you've done so baby steps until you reach desired look? The nickels above look a lot better than the pics show and I think the Santeen experiment is working good so far....just be careful and the crap will burn you also. Did I mention that it's also one heck of a toilet bowl cleaner ta boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice digs !

I am so used to door knocking that rejection does not bother me anymore. If I ask and they say no i just say thank you and " I always ask because I would never hunt anywhere without permission." I will look for something to say about their house, dog, cat, bird, or anything else to put them at ease. For me I am a Air Force Vet and retired Postmaster. I will tell them about me a little to let them know i am a trustworthy person. If it is my home town I will tell them I have lived here all my life except for my 7 years in the military. I tell them I will do no damage to their yard. I will cut not dig a horseshoe plug and flip it back. They will not be able to tell I was there. Just some ideas to help you get the courage to ask people. sometimes I do historical research and then ask people. pointing out historical info that will help. I also donate item to our historical society. They said I can use them as a reference. For me it is all about coins. If U really want permission and are desperate U could say"You can look and have anything that I find just let me take a picture of it." Ask is there anything U have lost and I would be glad to look for it and give it to u if I find it.

For a grind, you did good. Plenty of Wheaties there to keep things interesting. In my mind, if I am finding Wheaties, I know there is silver in the neighborhood.

Thanks for the post and Pics. Good to see what folks are finding with the e-trac.

Those are great finds for "grind" hunting. My "grind" hunting yields a wheatie every now and then and if I really get lucky, a silver coin.

I had a war nickel that was really crusty and I use Aluminum Jelly with a Q-tip and it cleaned up amazingly well. That is one option if you have that Issue.

I haven't tried aluminum jelly on a regular nickel to see if it would work, but I think the silver allowed the first nickel to clean up better.

Good luck with your permissions. I have been getting some lately that I have been chasing and have been really disappointed with the finds at these older homes (sometimes just a wheatie or two).

Congratulations on your finds. Keep it up. I hope you can get to some of those promising private grounds. Thanks for the picture.

Good job. I could live with it if my "grinding " resulted in 3 buffs, 3 silvers and and a bunch of wheats every few times out. Keep up the good work.
