In VA. I know you cant metal detect in state parks but what about public and national parks (though I am doubting the nation parks). Also do you need permission and who might I obtain it from? I've only been on private property befor.

here in cali public parks are fine. state parks in designated areas or not at all and national parks are a huge NO-NO. i wouldnt even try in a national park. they can confiscate your goods.

http://www.fmdac.org/parks/parks.htm State Parks - Website that links to a list of do's and don'ts by state.
http://www.treasurefish.com/government.htm National Parks - List some of the laws about National Parks and more.

As far a Public parks in the area, better check. Columbia SC city parks are good to go. However in Charleston, it is forbidden.

In MI you can go to a website and see where metal detecting is and isn't allowed in state parks. Some only allow you to hunt parking lots!! However the water is open game in all of them as long as your outside the roped off swimming areas in some!!
