Had the opportunity for a dig a couple of weeks ago. Our mate Robert very kindly gained permission from one of his local publicans to have a look at a spot behind his hotel. Plumbers digging a hole had come across a patch of bottles in the back yard. Three garbage bins of skittles and champagne beers had already been excavated. It was only a small area but when Geoff and I took about a foot of the top they were jammed in like sardines. Mainly more plain skittles and beers but I managed 6 torpedo's, 3 very old cleanskins with flat collars and round ends, 2 embossed Starkeys Mineral Waters 140 Phillip Street Sydney (this address is pre 1875) and one embossed J Ross on the shoulder and JRS on the back (Joseph Ross was a bottle maker in Sydney from early 1860's to 1890's) Geoff took home a nice pot lid and small embossed medicine pot. I'll post a pic shortly. I really was a great weekend and memorable dig. Thanks Hampy. The second Starkey's is in the polisher now.
