Proud to go into 2012 with my Sovereign GT

I have had my GT since 2006. During that time I have been tempted by the Dark Side. I did the Explorer shuffle and switched back to the GT. Now that I have a 12x10 which proved that the hype about the SEF coils is true. I see no other machine that can replace my GT. Unless Minelab comes out with a new Sovereign.

Hi Jason,

Happy New year! I see you really like the 12x10 SEF coil. Would you please share the "hype" that you have experienced with this coil and what other coil are you comparing this 12x10 to? (stock, another aftermarket coil etc) I look forward to your review of the coil. - Jim

THE SEF 12X10 as compared to the stock Sovereign GT 10.5 Tornado coil. It has better target seperation. It is lighter even with the coil cover on. The curve at the top of the SEF is a better visual refrence to pinpoint while in disc mode. It also appears to bring up the tones on deeper targets making them sound more crisp. I love the SEF and it will replace the stock coil for me. It also makes bottlecaps sound more broken up. which is a plus. take care Jason

THi Jason,

wow, thanks for the report -hmm now it sounds like I need to add it to my arsenal -HH Jim

Yes, I find the 12x10 seperates better as well. As for depth, I compared it to the stock coil on a buried silver dime and the 12x10 was deeper.

When I tested the 12x10 SEF on my GT at the wet salt sand I ran the sens at auto. Usually I run the sens at 12 oclock with the stock tornado coil. The depth of the SEF was extremely deep actually I was getting annoyed digging so deep for bits of broken pulltabs. I wont throw out exact depth numbers since i did not measure. But I think I heard chinese coming out of the hole. lol
The SEF i suspect is deeper than the stock coil. Plus the deep targets gave a better or crisper tone than the stock coil. Better coil control of the SEF due to it felling lighter than the tornado helps getting deeper targets.

Jason the Explorer isn't a bad detector like the Sovereign doesn't work for everyone.Maybe this summer I could talk Critter into the Buckeye hunt.Later Ron

Tiggar,

I have only used the 12x10 SEF at the beach on my Sovereign GT, so it is the only one I can comment on. I find that due to the lighter weight of the SEF and for the fact that it does not seem to get as much wet sand stuck to it as the stock coil , the SEF lighter and it gives me better coil control. . The SEF 12x10 go's just as deep or deeper than my stock coil, and that is is the results I noticed while running in auto sensitivity. I can not stress how it seems that the SEF gives more two way tones on deep targets. Yes the stock coil will go deep. But right off the bat while testing the SEF I noticed much better target audio on deep targets.

Ron,
Yes the Explorer is a fantastic machine. But for me the Sovereign GT is so much more versatile. I have a whole extra pole assembly which I use my Sunray S-8 on. I put the sovereign in an empty wonder bread bag and then I put it in the hip mount bag and hang it around my neck kinda like a camera. Then I put the hip mount bag inside the top part of my hip waders. Now I have a water machine. I did not and can not stand the screen glare that the explorer's and the E-Trac's suffer from. For me navigating menus within menus to make simple adjustments drives me crazy. Plus I feel as though a meter handicaps me since it makes me lazy relying on it to much. I like a machine that beeps and go's deep and that is what the Sovereign GT does for me. Like I said the Explores are fantastic machine and they obviously are as shown by all the great finds they have produced for many. But I must be honest and I may sound cocky. But I will go up against any Explorer with my Sovereign GT any day. Why? I know my Sovereign like I know the back of my hand. Every tone every null is easily understood by me. Knowing your machine IS! the whole battle plan to get results in the field. I can only imagine how many people purchased a Sovereign or an Explorer and did not give the machine time to show its worth. I got rid of the Explorer and went back to my GT since I could not stand the screen glare, the small buttons, and the deep menu' system. For me the digital Minelabs just did not cut the cake for me. But in now way will I knock any ones success with an Explorer.
