Prospective MXT User

Hello All,

I just joined this group, and thought I would mention why I joined. I started MDing back in the 1980's with a very inexpensive detector. I did most of my hunting in parks and beaches along the east coast of the US from PA/NJ through the Carolinas. I dug almost everything and found many coins, some rings, one 1937 Mickey Mouse belt buckle, and one large coin/medal that I have not yet identified. I haven't done any detecting in a number of years for many reasons, both family and medical. In the last few months I have been searching many detecting sites and talking to many people via email trying to decide on a detector. I received many suggestions, and started reading user manuals and other information that I was able to find. I have now decided on the MXT and that's when I started reading the posts here. This has convinced me even more that this is the detector that will work best for me. I presently live in southwestern OR but visit FL quite often and may be relocating to FL in the future.

After all this reading, what I have decided on, in addition to the MXT are the 5" and 8" excelerator coils. I am then going to add the Sun Ray headphones and probe. I don't know how soon I will purchase these, since I am presently paying for the last toys I purchased :).

Any comments or other suggestions would be appreciated. Also any information (especially concerning Florida) about regulations would be helpful.

Thanks to all for the suggestions I have already found in this group, and for any additional information or suggestions anyone may have.

Ernie

I have the MXT video for sale in the classifieds, if you are interested.

I feel for a person that has not detected for the last few years the MXT is one of the better choice of detectors that is out there. I find the MXT is a easy detector to use and you dont have to do a lot of messing with setting trying to understand them. With the factory presets it will do just great the first time out.
On the SunRay pinpointing probe when you get one you will see one of the best accessories you can buy and know why Ralph at SunRay is trying to make these probes for other detector. I started with one on my Minelab Sovereign and when they made them for the Explorer I got one for it too. Now I added the MXT my wife uses and had to get a SunRay probe for my wifes MXT as it is the best there is and worth every penny it cost. The SunRay headphones too you will love when you get them, so I feel you have made the best choices with the MXT and the decision to get a SunRay pinpointing Probe and headphones when you can.
We will be waiting to hear and see some of your great finds when you can get out.

Rick

Thanks Rick. I'm glad to hear I am making some good choices.

I have been out of detecting for years due to illness. I just traded for an MXT and I was really surprised at the ease of use. A few settings with the control knobs and I was set to go. I did some air tests and the machine correctly identified a quarter, dime and nickel.
This machine is the easiest to use and I can't wait until I feel a little better to get outside and do some real detecting.
I am also waiting for the 8" EXcelerator coils to come in. It seems that this is one of the most popular coils on the market.

Get the MXT mastered and you'll be able to haunt a variety of sites/conditions. The 8" EXcelerator coil is a very good coil for general application hunting. Laws in yards and parks and sportsfields are where I prefer the 8" EXcelerator to other coils, but when I move off the grass and into the brushy environs of older, overgrown parks, picnic and recreation sites, the 4

I owned and used my MXT for about 18 months before viewing the MXT video, all I can say is that it is so well worth it. Just by learning a few techniques from the video I have increased my finds, the day after seeing the video I went to a site I had detected a few days before and found a merc dime and a world war 1 era button I passed over as junk. Just my 2 cents worth :)

the area you wish to detect as cities, counties & states laws can vary. Or as an alternative, the nearest dealer or detecting club might know. I can tell you that I read FL claims to own the ocean & anything in it. Think this also applies to the Gulf of Mexico, & may or may not apply elsewhere (they don't want anyone to find old shipwreck treasure & keep it all for themselves). Also, any Federal property, likely prison term; historical sites & districts might be a problem, too. HH, George (MN)

Most FL beaches are open to detecting unless otherwise posted. On the treasure coast ship wreck areas you must not venture in to the water or dunes.:detecting:

Thanks for all the info folks. It looks like when I get down there again I'll just have to ask in the area I'll be in. I won't be going to any Federal sites because I know they are off limits. I also now know the FL State Parks are off limits. I'll stick to the beaches and city and county parks.

Thanks again,
Ernie

OK can someone fill me in on the SunRay pinpointer. My MXT is dang heavy as it is. I recieved a BullsEye 2 pointer with it. Of course it is broken right out of the box. It only vibrates and will not tone. Very dissapointing as pinpointing the object is the hardest part of the job for me. I usualy wind up digging a foot square hole as I search and search. I have eventually found two items. A clad penny and a pulltab. But I was thinking there has to be something better. I guess its not the SuperStores fault that I got a piece of junk. I havent even told them. Last time I called them to buy an extra fiber rod tip at $9.95(must wiegh an once or two) They wanted to charge me an extra 9.95 to ship it. (must weigh a few ounces tops.) I already paid 10 bucks to get it shipped to me. Does anybody know if it would be worth spending a 100.00 for one at my local dealer. Or should I just leave it in my trashcan here in the den, and try something else. I have a very smal orange metal detector I bought at Radio Shack years ago. It has a very tiny coil. I was thinking about maybe using it to pinpoint.

I went to the Website for SunRay and I think I see a device that is just a small coil in a rod that uses all the really expensive complicated majic of the MXT and possibly incorporates a switch to jump between the machines coil and its stick mounted coil. Does this thing bore holes in the ground or something? It's a pretty pricey additional weight on your machine, that leaves all the work of technology and magic to the MXT.

OK. OK. I know I am playing devils advocate here. And many of you are probaly dying to correct my thinking. I really do want to know what makes it the "talked about thing it is" The ads dont seem to explain anything about it's technology or pattern or just what makes it so great. As far as the add I read it was just all real or imaginary people bragging about how good it is. Maybe I read the wrong ads.

Man, you would never know what a happy go lucky guy I really am from this post, huh? I just really enjoy making informed puchases, and getting slammed by the SuperStore kinda didnt help my mood either. :) they really popped my bubble.

OK, Im ready. Blast me.

Frankly, right now, that thing would be way overkill for me. I've just got a simple Bullseye II to pinpoint with. That's about all I need at my level. They work great, it's right in my finds apron (an old leather tool belt thing) and I use it every day.

Lucklarry, I'd call up Whites. I'm sure they'd make good on your Bullseye. I've heard of how great their service was when a machine needed to go back, and I'm sure they could handle your Bullseye problem right away.

Kind Regards,

Kenfen

Thanks KenFen, I was hoping I just had a rare lemon.

I guess I should take it out of the can before I take the garbage out tonight. It's up at 4:30 am to traverse a good deal of range and not back until well after dark for a week or two.

Maybe after that I will be able to find some time to call up my "SUPERSTORE," and see how much they want me to spend to ship this thing back.

An as always we wish you Luck.Larry
