Prospecting with AT Pro and 4 1/2" coil

Looking for information on gold prospecting with my AT Pro. Anyone have experience using the 4 1/2" Super Sniper coil from Garrett for gold? Also any experience using the 5x8 DD for gold? Thanks Len

I'm anxious to see wht anyone has to say about the sniper coil myself. Although I have the 5x8 and it probably goes deeper than the sniper.

Is the Super Sniper superior to the the 5x8 DD for prospecting in creeks, rivers and dry areas. Thanks Steve! Len

I think most people will suggest you get the 5 x 8 over the sniper, because being a DD, it will handle higher mineralization better, which is typical of gold producing areas.

Hi Len,

Is a #1 Phillips screwdriver superior to a Phillips #2 screwdriver? No, they are both just tools, each specifically suited for certain tasks.

The AT Pro is a good gold machine but can use all the help it can get on small gold, the most common gold nuggets being quite small. The stock coil is best suited for stuff over a couple grams. I would recommend the 5" x 8" DD as a very good choice for general nugget detecting, this being the reason it is the stock coil on the AT Gold. It will be less reactive to the ground than the larger coil and has better sensitivity to nuggets weighing under a gram.

The 4.5" concentric is too small to use for general purpose nugget detecting as ground coverage does count. However, it has a slight edge over the 5" x 8" DD coil on the smallest nuggets, stuff down around a grain ( not gram). It is a better choice for extremely irregular bedrock surfaces and working around brush and boulders due to the ability to get into very tight places. Small coils will almost always pull more gold out of locations that have produced previously with larger coils, and so I have the smallest coil available for every detector I own for nugget detecting.

To summarize, the 5" x 8" DD is probably you best choice as it is a better all around coil. Many people prefer it to the stock AT Pro coil for all kinds of uses. But if I were heading into an area where I knew small gold was lurking I personally would also have the 4.5" along. It really just depends how serious you are about nugget detecting. More than most types of detecting it begs the operator to take advantage of any small edge in capability.

I hang out on the Prospecting Forum daily if you have any prospecting questions on just about any subject.

Thanks Steve for the detailed info. I'm new to the forums, so much great advice/information, it's really fun. Len

Ok this is my input on the 4.5 coil on the pro,it is a great coil for surface gold and finds stuff just under depending on the size,I'm talking .3 ,this coil is a great tool for slipping in and out of crevices and in around rocks,I love spending time on quarts runs and ping bits hidden in the the rounded quarts that my dedicated gold detector misses,Just a tip rap 3 windes of electrical tape around the outside of your coil cover because they crack on impact with the rocks when cold,I use the 5x8 as well but mainly in more open areas, haven't had it long and will give it a run on the gold fields shortly but I have tested it on some specky's and it has no trouble telling you there is gold in them ,This may surprise some of you but my settings are standard mode/zero,/no discim/ and leave the pro audio on /l,sensitivity as high as the conditions will allow, these setting work for me and just hearing the moans a groans that indicate your right in the materialised ground where I should be,I will try and get some photos up today to show you how small the gold is that I'm talking about, just to add ,great post Steve and John.your input to this great forum i always appreciated.Bazz in Oz

Been a bit busy getting ready for our fire season but found some time to post some pics.the specks in the quarts came from lumps about the size of your fist ,the pic with the coins has 3 gold sovereigns worth about $1000,and the pic with the probe has 12 Oz's found with a dedicated Australian detector but recovered with one of the best tools of our trade the Garrett probe best of luck to you all Bazz from OZ
