prospecting mode

Hi can anybody tell me what number does real gold have , does it depend on the size and shape of the gold, i have been air testing some gold i think ? i have the machine on prospecting mode and then turn over to coin mode and i am 10 to 20 is this a good way to use the ex terra 70 or you just got to dig every thing in prospecting mode, the coil i am using is the 18.7 dd thanks David.

Assuming you are not after gold jewellery which can cover a range based on the coin or ring involved, Prospecting is a little trickier and you want to dig for any Plus (positive ) number when your coil beeps.

Air tests will help get you used to your coil. But the detector will give you slightly different results when you bury your gold target and scan it again. The sound will be muffled and not as sharp. Buy a tiny 1 or 2 gram nugget, put it into a non metallic container or a tiny plastic bag and bury it in the soil that you intend to prospect in. Try scanning your buried nugget again from different angles. Remember the sound your detector makes because this will be very similar to what you want to find.
The shape also affects the result... as does the angle of approach to the target. Unlike coins, gold nuggets can generate a larger variety of results.

Also, gold can be fused to other minerals like iron ore and may contain different levels of silver and copper etc.
Note in the image below how the signal can vary based on the angle you approach the nugget. Note also that from one of those directions, I got a ZERO for each of the three sweeps that I made with the coil (I was using the Elliptical Coil).

Thus, each nugget can generate a different signal. But these signals tend to be within a certain range and most prospectors will dig between those numbers.

Your X-Terra 70 manual will tell you to approach a target from other angles before digging in order to read the numbers and see what it is that you might be about to unearth. A lot of people prefer to dig ALL targets when in Prospecting mode.
By switching to Relic-Treasure mode, you can check the numbers and see if you want to dig the target or not. I tend to dig any target over the positive threshold (+2 and up) since most iron targets will read in the negative range (eg: - 8 -12 etc) . Again, each prospector will base his preferences on the soil type and gold purity of the region. Since some gold is going to be on attached to ironstone, you should consider digging all targets in a certain Target ID range.

If you are looking for gold dig all signals even the ones that register as iron. A friend of mine found an eight ounce nugget attached to a piece of iron stone about the same size. His detector identified it as iron, he thought he had found another rusty old can as there were a few found in the area. When he dug out the nugget he nearly fainted. As for the numbers which nuggets would be under the size and impurities will make the numbers vary greatly. But generally 0 - 30 will be the range. seeya neilo:detecting:
