Prospecting mode question ... All metal?

Willee - Texas

Seems like the V3 in the prospecting mode/program picks up the object at the outer edge of the coil not the center.
Is this an all metal program?

When I did some air testing with a flake of gold (less than a grain),it would pick it up fine in the center of the coil. This was with the gain up around 10 and the threshold was pretty chattery.I placed the flake in some scotch tape and laid it on the ground to try and pick it up with the Spectra,it would pick it up faintly and at the center of the coil, but with the gain at 10 I was getting false (good) signals everywhere.I tried running the gain down below 10 but then lost the signal over the flake, while the falsing continued. This was in my backyard and there are some overhead power lines close by,but I dont think I quite have the propecting mode quite figured out yet.My backyard isnt nearly as mineralized as the area in the Black Hills where I want to hunt with it.Im going to try a slightly larger piece (about 3 grains) and see if I can cut the gain down and by how far to see if it helps with the false signals.

I made another test with a little larger nugget today at work.Using a 3 grain nugget laid on the asphalt,I decided to start out at a gain setting of 1 and the detector picked it up with no problem.I took the gain up to 3 with the detector threshold still running smooth and at this point I could pick up the little nugget at four inches pretty noticeably.I ended up going to a gain of six before the detector got noisier than I would be willing to put up with but at this point it would read the nugget a little over six inches. This nugget always read in the center of the coil and seemed to read the best towards the back of the center.
If you want to "simulate " a pennyweight nugget (24 grains) get a small fishing splitshot and trim it to 24 grains.I did this also since I dont have a larger nugget than 3 grains right now.I swung the coil about 3-4 inches above the weight and about blew my ears out!:yikes::biggrin: I think I have a little better confidence in the prospecting mode of the V3 now that I know what it "can" read. This weekend is a long one so Im taking the V3 to the claim, get the ground tracking figured out and see what happens.
On the left side of the dime is the .6 grain flake I tried and on the right is the 3.1 grain I used today.
