Prospecting Coils for MXT

I am thinking about buying an MXT, but I have been having difficulty determining what coil would be best for the occasional prospecting trip. Any suggestions?

If you are prospecting where there is highly mineralized ground, like in many parts of the northern California gold country, then you have to have a DD coil. I just bought mine after a lot of research (both online and field) - the 6X10DD coil seems to be the best bet. It strikes a good balance with regards to size and depth and maneuverability.
That's my 2 cents.

The 5.3 Eclipse is an excellent "all purpose" coil and I have used in often for nugget hunting duty. As a rule, I prefer a concentric coil to a Double-D. I am not one to put a lot of stake in "book theory" that suggests that a higher-frequency model (such as an MXT) is better for US 5

Great food for thought. Thanks to all. I will be making a purchase soon with a trip to Wyoming and beyond in the very near future.

A guy I know in California uses the 6"x9" and the 4'x6' coils only for gold. HH

If detecting for gold with the MXT, Dig every signal unless it's a really strong iron response. I used the 5.3 mono and got gold with it. but I believe using a DD coil with no discrimination setting would be even better in Hot Rock prone area's.

The 6x10" is (IMHO) the best overall coil to use when prospecting. It gives a bit more ground coverage than the mini shooter, better depth, and near the same small gold sensitivity. I find both the elliptical DD coils to be superior to the round (6") when hunting because, more often than not, I'm sticking just the tip into areas because of tight clearances and pinpointing is super fast (quickly pulling the coil backwards, whilst wiggling it, until the target is just under the tip). The elliptical coil is also why I don't use/need a pinpointer; just pick up the MXT by the middle stem, maybe change the coil angle, and use the coil tip. Also, the the 6x10" is just barely usable in a stream (bobs somewhat and can be a pain), the larger DD and the fat ol' 6 incher would be somewhat worse. I'd think that one of the Detech Excellerator coils woud be a bit of a better choice.. though I'm still drying out the innards of my 14" round EX2 coil (shoddy workmanship). ..Willy.
