Pro's versus Con's of the Excalibur II 1000

Hello Everybody,

I'm new to the shallow water/surf hunting. I've done alot of land detecting over the years and wanted to get into saltwater detecting. So I picked up a dual field doing OK with it. But looking to maybe get a excalibur II 1000 and just wanted opinions about it's good and bad points? Thanks....

The price probably. The weight is not bad if mounted behind the cuff on a straight shaft or chest mounted. The headphones suck for comfort. The stock knobs suck. But over all it is the best VLF out there for in the water. Well other than Max's SE Pro.

I Agree.......

DF Bandit where are you hunting...Florida?

Ive only had mine a month or so. For me its very focused under the coil unlike some machines that have a HALO off the coil and you have to FIND the target to ID it properly. The pods are great and so easy to back, hip, or chest mount. I know they wanted them to be light.... but the coil bolts are really small. For the price.... personally i think they made everything kind of cheaply except the pod and wires. Even the coil seem light weight and nothing id used off the beach. Hey.... but you can dive with it. It gets good depth mostly focused under the center of the coil. Takes a bit to learn the tones.... especially DEEP bottle caps.... but you learn quickly. You have an option of disc or AM unlike your PI. Id love to have my SE in the water.... but this is a good machine.

The Excalibur (or any Minelab BBS/FBS for that matter) is not as sensitive to tiny gold as other detectors. If you are beach hunting in the surf it wont matter, those targets will just fall through the basket anyway!! :detecting:

I hear so many times that Excaliburs wont find small gold and chains ,:rolleyes:but iv just had almost 3 separate months hunting in Spain and I am going to make a removable finer mesh for the bottom of my scoop so that I can keep hold of those PESKY ear studs and stop chains snaking through the holes in my scoop :surprised: Many times I had to dive under water and sift the sand with my fingers to find those elusive targets !! and yes I must admit that sometimes I have walked away in disgust to save time and dig another target , :surrender:. We all know that most ear studs are blingy/CZs and even if they are Diamonds they haven't got a great deal of value ( ONLY when you try and sell them $$$

I do pretty well with both the SE and Xcal. With the exception of a PI..... which machine in the water is BETTER? None do that well on chains or everyone would have one. Also i dont think there is any of the machines finding tiny gold at depth.... except maybe the big gold machines. So a Pro here for the Xcal is.... its waterproof and works..... many dont. I think the MLs get a bad rep on this especially for jewelry where most gold is mixed with other metal and WILL be picked up by the MLs. Also..... they dont air test well but put it in the ground and thats where it shines.

To ignore the conductivity of salt and pick up small gold at depth is something the detector world is waiting on. The Minelabs do a fair job at most on small gold.

In pinpoint it will find the smallest things you can imagine, but you have to listen carefully. I've found if the machine makes any kind of the correct tone even in a crackle or null while in disc mode something is there. Don't even let the target have a slight amount of gold plating on it, the machine will sound off. So I'll have to definitely disagree on the tiny gold capabilities.

Yes he did find his scoop a few seconds later, came in and put a small rope on it with a small cube of some kind that floated...

Amazing this guy with the handle with the cap has never had a problem..think his setup is a few years old..one of Max's Boys..he is like 6 foot 7..best deep RUFF water hunter I have every seen.....has a very different type of scoop..and it works..will post up some video on it saturday...
