Props to whoever gave me the faceplate protection idea

I couldn't find the post so I don't know who to thank, but someone posted about using the plastic from a report cover to protect a detector's faceplate.

Specifically, the readout area of the faceplate on my F5 is very flimsy and poorly protected by the housing so it was getting too much scratching in a short period of time. I could envision having problems seeing the display after a couple hundred hours of use.

Using someone's suggestion, I cut the plastic from a report cover and sized it to fit.

I added a couple tiny drops of water to help it stick in place, but it has a natural static cling to it.

For good measure, I taped a couple small pieces of gaffers tape across the edges onto the side of the control housing.

Works great, and when it starts getting too worn I'll just replace it with another piece.

Whoever made the post about doing this, please step up and take a bow...

All,
I was in the cell phone store yesterday and noticed a box of screen protectors for cell phones hanging on the wall.
They are fairly inexpensive and seem to be just the trick for a detector screen plus they have a one year warranty. It may take two or more to cover your screen, but there are several in the box I saw.
A search for "writeright", "fellowes" and/or "cell phone screen protector" will get you to them.
Happy new year!

- - I'm glad it worked out. Let me refresh your memory on another tip I left behind, somewhere.

Get some clear packing tape and cover the buttons, too. Burnish it into place and then trim it all nice and neat with a razor knife. Keeps dirt and wear off the cointrols and you can replace it easily. When you take it off, it does leave a little adhesive residue, but some GooGone or WD-40 cleans that off, no problem.

I extend the tape upwards, 1/8" onto the screen - and affix it to the lower edge of the acetate screen cover. This holds the screen in place and gives a seamless shield to the face.

I couldn't find it at Wally World and went a different route.

This is what gave me the idea in the first place. I just looked around for what I had, hoping to secure something with a littl emore rigidity. SO I guess we all owe you the debt of gratitude, after all!

Thanks - lets hope it remains

Thanks to you both, I appreciate it!

I guess the post being deleted is why I couldn't find it.

Does it seem like posts keep disappearing from this forum?

Has anybody else noticed this? If so, why?

I'm thinking maybe because of unauthorized links? Hopefully not because of less than 100% positive comments about Fisher.

I have noticed it. Normally it's for both. While I dont understand how you can "authorize" a link, I do know the truth when I see it, even if it's not 100% positive, as you put it. Seems that is enough, at times, to be censured.
Keep in mind this is a moderated forum, not anarchy. Those with the moderators ribbon do as they see right.

One wonders why these expensive units don't come with a screen cover ala XLT circa 1993 that can be easily removed and another one put on quite cheaply..No matter how careful you are screens can get scratched and since this originated 15 years ago one wonders why other companies don't follow the excellent and rather cheap plus for big bucks units..Come to think of it even earlier units had these covers..

.... Im with you Dan. How much would it cost to include covers and such? These simple things should be included with the cost of the detector, in the first place. It's little things litke that which bond customer loyalty.

If you wanna make money with accessories, do it with T-shirts.

I must say I agree that Fisher:fisher: should offer covers with their units. I should not have to look for something to protect my investment. And sandwich bags etc. are not appealing to me.

Some sporting goods stores sell laminating plastic for hunting/fishing licenses...6x6 i think.
you could laminate the whole faceplate. And if im not mistaken its scratch resistant.

OOPS. I had purchased a piece of acrylic .8 thick from Lowes. Traced it out and cut and sanded it then taped it with good double sided tape. Great ideas to protect the F-5
