Propointer Problem

I've had the Propointer for about a month now and I'm not sure I have a problem with it. I'll describe what happens, and please let me know if it's normal or not.

I detect with the XP Deus and when I find a target to dig, I kneel down and set the detector down in a way so I don't get feedback in my headphones when I turn on and use the propointer. I get the most feedback when I have my detector set to use 4Khz but my issue occurs in any of the 4 frequencies on my XP Deus.

Anyway, after digging a hole, I turn on the propointer and go searching. When the target is in proximity of the pinpointer, the propointer sounds off as it should. When the target is beyond range, I would expect to get no sound or vibration from the propointer, but instead I get consistent chirping. This is even true if I remove the target and pinpoint the hole again...the chirping presents itself. Sometimes I turn off the propointer, turn it back on again, and within seconds the problem recurs. I don't press the propointer excessively at all, but I still get consistent chirping when the tip of the coil makes contact with the soil. I've read if you use too much pressure, the wire inside the propointer comes too close to something critical and it falses; this may be happening, but I assure you I'm hardly putting any direct or side pressure on the propointer. This problem occurs in most of the holes I dig, so I'm leaning toward ruling out irony soil as the culprit.

Any advice?

Brand new battery...and tried another brand new battery....problem continues.

This may sound stupid but do you have any rings on? I know that I caught myself holding the propointer in my left hand sometimes and it was going off erratically because of my wedding band.

Not sure what kind of pin pointer you have..didn't mention the name. (If its a Garrett Pin pointer). I have propably the same issue you have..I just ground balance the pin pointer ( when that happens) and the problem went away. I'm sure you know how already. Turn the pin pointer on and before you hear the second beep, touch the ground with the tip. The Garrett Pin pointer runs on a 12KHZ also you might want to run your Deus at a higher frequency to see if problem persist. Hope this help.

Ah yes, sorry, it is a Garrett Propointer. I will try your suggestion and report back, thanks.

I found that by folding up a piece of card board and stick it in the cap it ensures the battery to stay in contact with the connectors. This helped a lot with mine. When you look inside after you take battery out you can see how the battery may not make best contact all the time.

Thanks, this helps most of the time...not near as frustrating!

I noticed the little square sponge that's poorly attached to the inside of the cap has a mind of it's own. I'm going to ditch the sponge and implement your suggestion. Thanks!

[asiandigger..]I did not know that you could ground balance the Garrett Pin pointer ?
