Prolly been asked, but I have a question about Vaquero in sand

Im going to a beach hunt in a couple months and my detector is a Tesoro Vaquero. Im guessing that beach hunts are only on dry sand so I'm just curious what kind of settings I should have when I go. Do I still ground balance in sand? should I just use it in All Metal since the targets wont be too deep? Im just trying to get a general idea. Thanks for any help

My beaches are pretty mild, here in Texas, you might not be as lucky. I ground balance in the dry sand but rebalance a couple times more as I transistion to the wet stuff(very important). Threshold about 12 o'clock position, disc is just above iron where a nail still sounds off , but is broken up. If you disc out tabs you will miss alot. I run the sens as high as I can without too much chatter. I do submerge my coil sometimes, but have to cut the sens quite a bit. Always carry fresh water to rinse the machine afterwards and cover the box if there is any salt mist in the air.

Thanks..im probably going to get a cover for it so i dont have to worry about the control box...i figured setting it up how i usually do would be best...just didnt know if it had to be ground balanced in dry sand

I have used mine in dry sand, no problem.

Now that targets not being too deep statement...you might be very surprised how deep things sink in sand, and how fast they sink.

I should of stated this in a different way, but I meant beach hunt as in a competition beach hunt

Bobby s,

I have a Vaquero but haven't hunted the beach with it yet.

I've seen planted hunts that bury targets to deep & or on edge. Be sure you know what the targets are (coins (copper, zinc, clad, nickle, ect.) - steel washers - aluminum targets) so you won't discriminate them out.

Talk to the planners of the hunt or previous hunters from the year before to see what they have used as targets in the past...........Also see what coil restrictions there are & if there are restrictions on scoops & or recovery devices (ceaves-pinpointers & such).

Most hunts are fast and furious with few wasted moves & quick recoveries. At least by the pro's. Hunts are good way to hone your skills & pick up tips.

Good hunting !

I took mine to florida last spring (clear water area) and found that it works well in the dry sand. when you get into the wet sand the all metal mode starts to go crazy, you cant retune it in wet sand, but turn the disc up untill it tunes it out and it will work fine, i tested it pocket change and my 14k wedding band and sent a clear tone thru the disc. You just cant use all metal mode in the wet stuff. I also took it in the water up to a couple feet and had no problems, i found a bunch of stuff, mostly cheep jewelery, but did find a sterling womens ring.
