Prohunters post a helpful tip once a week?

I would like to ask John Ed, Uncle Willy, NMJ5,and a few others, don't know the more experienced persons that well yet, to make one post a week offering tips on metal detecting, perhaps how to pinpoint, determine as best as possible pull tab vs. coin. Deal with silver at different depths or give the realistic expectations one could expect from the various coils. Sizing the coil, etc. Likely areas to hunt, best times to hunt the play grounds, and you guys no doubt by now realize I'm a newbie b/c I believe I've about covered it all, when in reality, I've not so much as scratched the surface of your expertise. You all have been so helpful to me, and hope to hunt with you one day and really learn some great tips.

When I use to race motorcycles, I would not ride with anyone who could ride equal to me or less than me when I was preparing for a big race. I would only ride with someone who could ride way better. That way I learned so much more and faster. Later, I would take that same principle back to those guys who rode slower and in turn, they began to race faster. So in M/D IMHO the best way to learn is to get some training from you experienced folk. Thus, these tips each week would be a great start. Thanks for reading and considering. Lewis.

If you scan the archives you'll find a trainload of tips. As for pinpointing every detector ( and coil ) pinpoints a little different than another so you would have to specify. On the Garrett web site there is an animation showing the proper way to pinpoint with the Ace 250 and John and me have made a ton of posts on pinpointing.

how about the other suggestions, Uncle Willy? With maybe some uptodate insight, just a suggestion. Don't know that's why I'm asking. TRust your judgement Lewis, thanks

Okay I'll give you a tip now regarding coils. The rule of thumb with coils is that the depth they will achieve under ideal conditions closely matches the diameter of the coil. So if you have a 12-inch coil it theoretically should reach down twelve inches, maybe more.

Hey, Uncle Willy,
You did it again, I have been wondering about getting a larger coil for my 1350, however I did not know the advantages or what to buy.
You keep giving away this wonderful advise and I Thank You very much.

Maybe we oughta start a "ace machine faq"... :detecting:
Might come in handy as a way to collect all the different
posts on the various subjects, and throw together in one
file. Actually, I think someone did that to some extent,
but I don't know if it's downloadable..
One thing...I sure ain't no "pro" hunter...I just started
about 2 months or so ago... I'm still in diapers compared
to someone like Uncle Willy, who has been at it for years..
I'm not sure how long John has been at it, but sure it's
been awhile for him too...
I haven't had time to detect any the past week.
Been doing some puter upgrades, etc...Finally broke
down and upgraded to XP for one...Been tweaking it up.
Also broke down and got a DVD burner so I can start
cooking movies onto disks. Been recording movies
for a good while, and they were starting to fill
my hard drive. Been editing them, and burning to
disks...Kinda time consuming with the rendering, etc,
but I've already cooked up quite a few, and can
clear em off the drives. The average movie is about
4-6 gigs, using mpeg 2, depending on length, etc.
Some are bigger.. IE: I recorded all three of the
"Godfather" movies, and the first two of those are
about 8+ gigs apiece... Pretty long..
Anyway, poor yeller feller is pouting from lack of
attention, but I'm about done with all this puter mess
and will get back after it.
If I had a tip for this week, it would be to avoid
puters, if you want to get any tecting done..
