My question; can one do his (user mode] programming indoors?
 
yes. toggle the sensitivity over to manual, (using the arrow left/right and up/down buttons on the lower left side of the control panel) and set it to 1 so you dont hear any chatter. or you can do it with just the head unit disconnected from the coil.
