PROGRAMING the E-TRAC

i really dont know how to work the quickmask, but i watched a youtube clip and it showed me how to run things acrossed the coil and except them into a program. so i did it with some silver coins and wheat pennys and a gold ring. this is what i have been hunting with. im getting alot of wheat pennys but only one silver coin so far. once i get andys book i hope i cant under stand how to program the discrimination,im more of monkey see monkey do. heres what it looks like

imo you are dicriminating too much. Only the top left hand corner 'needs' to be discriminated. I'm assuming the etrac is similar to the explorer.

I would put the machine in the Factory Coin mode, what you have there will allow you to miss all kinds of coins, deep clad and deep silver also. Your also eliminating the chance of picking up any Gold signals.

This is more like what your looking for.

I agree, I started out using the factory coin program and just opened up the upper right hand side. Then I seemed to have better luck with Andy's program. I still alternate. If I get into a site that is colonial, I just discriminate the very bottom where the nails and such would show up. I dont want to miss too many colonial targets. I believe its called extensive nail reject. I think you are running too much discrimination and will miss quite a few potentially good targets

yes it is very quite and when she sounds off most of the time its a coin. i do get some pull tabs because of the gold ring i put in. if i can open the top right up on the coin program i will use it tomorrow. im going to a park in pueblo thats over 100 years old so i know there is some good targets there. i hit it for about 1-hour today and got a 1920 wheat and three targets i quite digging because the digger i got with the E-TRAC is hard to get passed 10 inches with. i might take a spade shovel tomorrow. i just dont like to stand out when detecting and using a shovel could up set some people.

Good luck and remember you will get a lot more signals with the coin preset some good and some not so good. And be carefull with athe shovel as we would hate to have you "stand out" as you say,Ray.

lol thats a cherry picking pat.
id use it one day then open up more the next then more the next day till you was wide open. then you will know the etrac very well.
man when i chime in i get peoples feathers ruffled up hehe hope i dont get bashed for this.

all i know is this E-TRAC is a great metal detector, i wanted a detector that would give good sounds on deep targets and this is it for sure. hunting can only get better with this E-TRAC. ALL i need now is my sunray, i ordered one sat from tenn but they called me today and said they were back ordered intil feb 13 so i will have to look some where else to get it by the weekend.

I would regroup, clear that black screen & get yourself back in the factory coin mode asap.
Get yourself a Lesche digger or similar tool which wont tear up the ground if you dig a U shaped flap & replace when done.
Buy Andy Sabischs book & read a few times.
Go and dig every signal, get used to what you hear vs. what you dig up.

When coins and other items are left in the ground for a long period of time along with other junk the signal will not be the same as air testing. The type of soil will also make a difference in target response, like mineralization, moisture content and depth of target.
The type of pattern you have would be great for finding items lost most recent. You will find some wheat cents and other coins that the machine is hitting in your open field but you will miss a lot of good deep coins that you would rather be digging.

Good luck and Happy Hunting

Kevin. My advice below assumes you just got your E-Trac. As everyone has pointed out, I think you've got too much of the Smart Screen blacked out to be able to detect coins in the same hole with trash. Note its very common to have multiple targets under the coil simultaneously, especially in parks. I think what most beginners, including myself, the number of tones was the most overwhelming at first. So I would recommend you try the following:

1) Use quick mask to blank out FE 27-32; This will knock out the majority of Ferrous targets, but not all.

2) Switch to 4-tones instead of multi-tones for several hunts until you get a handle on other very important features, including sensitivity, gain, normal, threshold tone, etc.

Here are a couple things you can work on before switching to multi-tones:

1) Learn to tell the difference between a ferrous (e.g., iron) and non-ferrous signal (coin) by sweeping the coil in different directions to determine whether you have a repeatable signal (i.e., good target). Check for older posts on this very important topic.

2) Screw caps are everywhere in parks, and they often will hit in the range of 38-42 for the 1-liter size caps. Try learning to identify them before digging by lifting the coil 6" and if its still sounds off, you likely have a screw cap under your coil. Naturally dig the first 10 or so to convince yourself that it works.

Good luck and keep posting any questions along the way.
