I have been hunting this church since I started detecting and it always seems to give something up. I ended up with 2 silver dimes, a 1907 S Barber and a 1960 D Rosie a ring with some interesting history and a bunch of toasted Wheaties. The ring is inscribed with OB STER 1/30 14K RGP, it was manufactured by the Otsby Barton Company, established in 1879 in Providence Rhode Island. Engelhart Otsby (one of the founders) was killed in the sinking of the Titanic, making their jewelry more collect able. I have been told that the stone is Tiger Eye. The area that I was hunting is covered with grass now but it was rocked with 4 to 6" of gravel at some point in time. It would compare with todays 3/4" minus crushed rock and has set up just as hard. I don't know if this would make a difference in the numbers I was getting on the silver targets but they were very bouncy and I would have never dug them by the numbers. Would the layer of compacted rock mess with the numbers? The tones sounded relatively good and were repeatable. Everything seemed to be 6 to 7" deep, just an inch or two under the compacted rock. I'm going to have the ring checked out and probably repaired.
