Problems with original sovereign, need help!

Hi all, I'm having a problem with my original Soveriegn. What's happening is the threshold hum is going beserk. It will go from a nomal sounding threshold to a low sounding deep buzz and then back to normal. At first I thought it was my battery so I went to the 8 AA pack, thought that fixed the problem but it did not. Thought it might be the coil so I switched coils, same problem. The problem started when I hooked up a SunRay meter, I'm pretty sure this is just coincidence and not the cause of the problem. I've got the control box off and just hooked up the coils straight to the box and I'm still having this problem, tried all different sens, settings and disc settings. The threshold seems fine until you pass a target over the coil, it detects the target fine, but after the target is not under the coil anymore that's when the threshold starts to go crazy, going from normal threshold tone to the low sounding deep buzz then back back and forth between the two. I'm really bummed out as I just got this detector a few weeks ago, then I bought a new 8" coil , SunRay meter and a new straight shaft mod with the SunRay meter mount. So now I'm in almost $600 for this outfit. Would sure appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Gary

My first thought is are you doing this in a house? if so that would do it.

I can get mine settled down in auto sens in the house but its always better to do the sov testing outside.

Neil

Hi Neil, no this is happening in the field away from any powerlines etc. I was at the same site before without any problems. I tested it in my backyard with the other coil and still the same problem.
Thanks,
Gary

sounds like you have a loose pin connection on your coil plug.

Hi Gary, HOPE YOUR DETECTOR PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED BY THIS TIME!!...................No fun to have malfunctions with your main detector!!............................I did something similiar to what you did starting in June!! Also I spent about the same amount!! I started out with a Sovereign XS with an original CoinSearch 8 inch coil!! Since then I added a Sovereign 550 meter and a SunRay 180 meter! Also added a hipmount and a 10 inch BBS coil!!......................In the future may add either the 15 inch WOT or one of the 15 by 18 coils!! Also I acquired an extra control box just in case I need extra parts!!......................................I'm still learning but I know that this is a powerful detector and will find goodies that have ben missed before due to all of the small iron that normally plagues most of the other brand detectors!!......................If you need any help a or advise .....JUST ASK........I figure that we should be even in that department!.................JOE

Hi Joe, thanks! I sent the detector to Keith Wills, he told me if it needed parts, he couldn't help me as they won't sell him parts. I took the chance that it's hopefully a solder job at the coil pin connection at the box. I'd rather have him look at it first and hopefully fix the problem, if he can't I'm sure he will tell me the problem or what part is needed.

I had same probs.. My Sov. came with 10" and 5" Tornados. Started getting strange threshhold noises noises from 10", got frustrated and switched to smaller coil. Later, I wanted larger coil for beach work and decided to disassemble coil at control box jack. I found that one of the solders was a little larger than the others and was shorting out against the inner diameter of the tubular jack. I simply filed a bit of solder off and it went back to work. You can do this yourself if you're careful and remember, don't lose the little set screw! And be careful about filing. Those solders fit close and once they come out of their holes, are almost impossible to reinstall and resolder! mike

Hey thanks madaboutmike, had a feeling it was a bad pin connection at the box after Marc(NB) posted (thanks Marc), that's why I sent it to Keith Wills, he's one of the best, if not the best, in the buisness at detector repair. I should be hearing from him soon. If that was the problem or whatever it is I'll post back when I get the news. Thanks to all that posted to try and help!
