Problems with GTAx 1250 and GTP 1350

Hi All,

Hope you can help me.

I had a GTAx 1000 for many years. It worked great as a coin-shooter in and around my area, Simi Valley, CA. I liked it so well that it did not even cross my mind to buy anything other than a Garrett machine when I gave my GTAx 1000 to my son-in-law a year ago.

What I ordered was a GTAx 1250. When it arrived, I assembled it and turned it on. It immediately went into a loud overload sound. Called the vendor & Garrett. Went through all their reset suggestions, but the unit was in an overload sound all the time. Was told to send it back to the vendor.

What came back from the vendor was a bran new GTAx 1250. They said the coil on the first unit was defective. Assembled this unit and it did not go into overload right away. Went hunting and it went into overload a lot. Turned the sensitivity all the way down, and there was no change. Dug some of the targets that were causing the overloads and found such things as a roofing nail at over 3

How weird!! The 1000 PM was the predecessor to the 1250. There is really not that much difference between the 2 (I have them both), although the 1250 seems to get a little better depth and hits a little harder on nickles and gold, or so it seems. And I believe the 1350 is pretty much a 1250 with profiling and I'd be willing to bet a different chip, too, from what I'm reading about how they perform. It could be that you got 3 bad ones in a row (I thought that kinda stuff only happened to me!!)but what are the odds of that. I'm really sorry you had such a bad time with your Garretts cuz they are great rigs and so easy to use and well worth another try. The only things that should make them overload is great big hunks of stuff near the surface and definately not a coin at 2".

I have had a GTI 2500 since June. It started going in and out of overload on an unpredictable basis. I just sent it back to Garrett last Friday and haven't heard back from them. It was very good at picking out individual targets in trashy areas. All at once it started going berserk in a heavily junk infested area. Just one long tone with static in the background. Is that what you mean by overload? Anyway, it was not usable the way it was going. Advise. Jim

Hi jimmileo,

It was about a year ago that all of this happened. What I remember is the tone was very loud, low, and sort of warbled. Hard to describe sounds.

Hope your GTI comes back working great.

Good Luck

Hi BigCatDaddy,

Thanks for the come back.

My luck has never been very good, but that experience is a little more than even I am accustomed to.

The reason I made the post was that I really could not understand all of what happened. I know from reputation, and from my experience with the GTAx 1000 that Garrett makes good detectors.

Have been thinking about getting an Ace 250 but because of the "experience" I am a bit nervous.

Hi, Hunt,
I have had a similar problem with my Garrett when the batteries were very low. There is this stacatto sort of overload sound and, of course, it is unusable.

I replaced the batteries - with some that were old. Same effect. Another replacement and they were fine - til I took them out in the cold. Same problem.

I took the batteries out and warmed them under my arm - all was well and has been since.

It seems the GTP 1350 is sensitive to such things.

I think you just got caught in the middle of a production glitch and got three lemons in a row. It happens and happened with the GTI coils a few years back. You should have stuck with it till they sent you a good one - and they will do that until you are satisfied.

You would be more than satisfied with a 250. It's quite a machine.

Bill

Hi Uncle Willy,

A production glitch sounds right.

I have nothing but praise for Garrett customer service. When the third unit failed, Garrett customer service offered to help me get a detector from another manufacturer. I said OK, and they followed through and helped me get a different brand of detector.

Life is full of forks in the road. I might should have stuck with it and gotten a good functioning Garrett. But, I am pretty happy with what I ended up with.

Don't think I have to be nervous any more about buying an Ace 250. Now I just have to figure out where to get the money. Guess I need to get out there MDing more.

Thank you, everyone for your responses.

Yeah one thing about Garrett, they bend over backwards to satisfy. Years ago they had coil problems and a slew of bad coils went out but they made good on all of them no matter what it took.

If you get a chance snag onto a 250. It will make your day. It's Garrett's top selling detector, and for good reason.
