Problem With Target Separation

Hello All,
I have been using my explorer for about a year now and I love the Machine, but today I was with a friend comparing signals and I found that I could not get a hit off of a bullet that was placed in between 2 nails. The nails were on each side of the target about 1 1/2 inches away. I tried to lower my sens, but it did not help. Even with ironmask set at -16 i still did not pick up the target. I even went as far as to put the coil on the bullet, and it still did not register. I switched to my sunray 5 inch coil, and Iit would not separate the objects either. My friends detector had no problem reading the bullet as a good hit. I do alot of relic hunting in trashy areas, and as of now it looks like I may have been missing many good targets. Are there any other settings that I should try to resolve this?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Paul, I had this same problem at the beginning of last year. It was the coil. The cable was bad. It would work some of the time just not all the time. It drove me crazy. Also, the explorer works much better on targets that are in the ground than on air testing.

Were you in conductive audio or ferrous? at -16 you should hear everything.. in ferrous you sjould have gotten high tones off the bullet

Jim,
I was using ferrous and -16 Iron Mask. I could not here a high tone from the bullet at all. I was running fast recovery. All I could hear was the low Iron sound. My friends detector picked the bullet up very well. I was also reading the post about a bad coil. What symtoms should i look for there?
Thanks for all your help,
Paul

Paul,
I've found with DD coils that nails will mask signals if the nails are accross the center web of the coil. If you turn ninety degrees you should be able to get the bullet.

Thanks for all your input. I will continue trying different approaches.
Paul
