Problem with Pin Pointing the AT Pro

If a target is 6" / 7" or less I can pin point it without any problem. I use the Pro / Zero mode and Sensitivity at Max or 1 or 2 clicks below max, depending on chatter. I don't mind some chatter. I also use the standard 8.5" x 11" DD coil. If the target is deeper than 7" the pin point signal drops down to very "faint" to no signal at all. Is this normal? Does my Pro need a checkup? Thanks for any advice. Dave.

If you lose your signal, start over again. Move the coil off to the side away from the target, push & hold the pinpoint button and find the area with the strongest signal. BINGO! That's where the target is.

I've had my AT Pro for about a year and have not used the Pin Pointer for the last six months. The AT Pro was the first detector that I owned with a dd coil and it was a challenge to pin point so I thought there must be an easier way. I now simply locate my target, turn the coil 90 degrees and cross the line of my initial signal. The target will be in the center of the coil where it appears when using the pin pointer. The target is usually dead on or sometimes in the sidewall of my plug. You may want to give that a try and see how it works for you. For me, I will never use the pin point button again.

One of the things you need to check is that you are not starting your pinpointing over another target as this will mute the pinpoint. I love the pinpointing on the pro and just use that to find targets. The only time I have an issue with it is if I do this. If you have a big piece of iron that you are discriminating out, you probably won't hear that iron as you start your pinpoint. I made that mistake a lot in the beginning. Find a clean piece of ground and pinpoint away!

I have not enjoyed the pinpointer mode as much - I go mostly by feel now, fast sweeps in a cross pattern as I have identified the sweet spot for my loop.

I have found the pin point mode useless unless it is a shallow item.

Very good tip R/Digger. It's just that I have been detecting for 30+ years and am used to the pin point mode with, great accuracy, of other detectors.
I'll just have to get used to your suggextion. It sounds like a winner. Thanks and HH.

Thanks for the reply John, but I have been doing that. There were times where I pressed the PP button too close to the target and it seemed like I was actually
elliminating the target and received no audio signal. I would then move the coil from the target area, repress the PP button and scan over the target again and there was
the signal again;;;;;as long as the target was less than 7" or 8" deep. If deeper, SILENCE, not even a chirp. Keep up the good posts John. We all enjoy them. Dave.

As long as the targets are 8" deep or less, I will get an audio signal. Any deeper on coin sized targets, no audio signal. I do get a VISUAL/ NUMERICAL signal
on deeper targets. Also, if the target is larger than coin size, such as an old lock, spoon, crushed can etc., I do get the audio signal. Thanks for your reply. Dave.

Thanks for your reply. At one time or two, I did try pin pointing too close to the target and did lose audio contact with it. From then on I made sure to use your suggested
tip and it works as long as the target is 8" or less deep. Will your ATPro give an audio signal on coin sized targets deeper than 8" or 9"? Dave.

I think everyone is missing the point of your question. On deep targets, it is entirely possible that your detector will detect deeper than it can pinpoint. There's nothing wrong with your machine. I see it happen all the time with the AT PRO, my other Garretts and other brands as well.

For me pinpointing is easy to find peak left to right.. but not so easy front to back. Just step around 90 degrees and pinpoint left to right again. It works...
