Problem with my new Ace 250??

Well the weather here in Michigan is up to 50 degrees..so I thought I would try out my christmas present. Much to my disappointment...I think there is a problem with my new Garrett.
I was at an old picnic site by a local lake and my detector would keep going off, but giving me a different reading almost all the time. I put it in coin mode and tried again...still would show 5 cent...then 25 cent...sometimes $1. So I dig and find a pull tabs. So I kept trying and I found out that I could tap on the bottom of the coil and it would go off. I kept tapping lightly on the search coil and it kept going off. So I turned down the sensitivity to about half and it wouldn't make a sound when I tapped anymore...but it still doesn't register a target correctly. I even dug down about 4" and planted a dime and scanned over it and sometimes it would detect it as a penny or a quarter, sometimes it wouldn't detect it at all.....I think I have a short or something...I need advice before I send it back and get a new one.

My hunting buddy had the same problem, took it to the dealer he bought it from ,he replaced the coil, problem solved.

Garrett really looks after its customers well! I have had some problems with detectors too in the past. They are electronic pieces of equipment and can break down just like a TV or computor. Also, detectors will never break if they sit in a closet year after year. On the bright side , you bought a machine made in USA and you will be looked after.

I'd say you have a production problem. Call Mary Penson at Garrett or email her and explain the problem. You'll probably get a new machine.

Forgot to say it could be the coil. They act real screwy with a faulty coil. Check with Mary and she may just put one in the mail for you.

Thank you for all the info. I will get a hold of Garrett on Monday and find out about getting a replacement. I am sure they will take care of me. I have heard nothing but good about them so far.
