Problem with my G2

Hi all. Let me first say that I love my G2- I've never had a detector whose language I understand better than this one (by the way, anyone who doesn't think this detector is outstanding for old coins is mistaken).

A couple of weeks ago, I started to get quite a bit of "noise" when sweeping the coil (stock 11"). I was in an old farm field where I had been before with no trouble. Obviously, I checked connections/cable wrap etc. Lowering the sensitivity was not much help, but increasing the discrimination did help- provided I moved it up past 70 or so (there was still come crackle, but not as bad). I took her home, gave a thorough cleaning of machine, coil and coil cover, checked screws/connections again, etc.

I tested her in the yard- still a lot of noise. Went back to the original field and it was worse- so much so that it was impossible to discern any of the smaller or lower signals. It was still somewhat useable, but pretty maddening considering she normally does not make a peep unless something is under the coil.

Is something like this typically a coil problem? Any suggestions or should I just send her in to First Texas?

Thanks for the help- Dave

If you've ruled out EMI the coil would be my first suspicion before anything else in the electronics. Some times a fresh set of batteries might help too. Do you know of...or do you have another coil available to try?

Charles

Thanks for the reply Charles. Definintely ruled out EMI and tried several new batteries with no luck. Unfortunately, I don't have another coil that will fit.

Teknetics user in your area who might help you check out the coil issue? That's usually the first 'part' that I have found to b an issue with most brands I have experienced similar results from.

Monte

Thanks Monte. There are no local users that i'm aware of, but there is a Tek dealer about an hour from me. Perhaps worth the trip before I send my detector in for repair.

Sorry Eliisa, I agree it sounds like a coil issue. Last year at this time I was still in NY. Butnow I'm in Ca. And next month I'll be using my detector to find gold.
